ALBUM RELEASE // The Besnard Lakes’ ‘A Coliseum Complex Museum’ Is Out Now

Besnard Lakes focus their lush energy on a sunnier, catchier sound. Jace Lasek’s clean falsetto is more alive when paired with high-flying guitars, and alongside the band’s blanketed, nonlinear arrangements, he sounds like he’s studied the Bee Gees and Brian Wilson… they have remastered their trudging density into a pop jubilee.“- Pitchfork

A Coliseum Complex Museum by The Besnard Lakes is out now, worldwide! An immense album with some of their best songs and sounds ever!

LISTEN // Unknown Mortal Orchestra Share New Tour Dates And SILICON Rework Of “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone”

Today, Unknown Mortal Orchestra is announcing a new slew of tour dates in the US and their first ever shows in South America. Selling out venues across the country, UMO have elevated their live show to new heights, so it’s only fair to give the people what they want, which is The Best Band in the World.

Brothers Ruban and Kody Nielson have been playing, recording and collaborating on music for decades.  From the influences of their jazz musician father and dancer mother, Ruban and Kody have gone on to play in New Zealand’s The Mint Chicks, and at its end in 2010, moved on to separate projects.  Ruban formed Unknown Mortal Orchestra out of Portland, while Kody collaborated with various artists and musicians before his own solo project, SILICON, took shape.  At the end of 2015, as UMO’s Multi-Love and SILICON’s Personal Computer made the rounds, garnering critical acclaim, Ruban and Kody (who played keyboards and drums on UMO’s M-L) took some time to rework tracks from each of their records.  The theme of phones led to Kody working on UMO’s “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone,” changing it from a bouncy, sprite disco track to a sparser song filled with space, treated vocals and isolated drum breaks.  Ruban’s rework of SILICON’s “Cellphone” is turned moody and dark, with a skittering beat and additional vocals.  The limited edition “Phone” 7” will be available on April 1, 2016. Previously, the two shared Ruban’s rework of “Cellphone,” and today, we’re sharing Kody’s rework of “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone.”

ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Black Mountain Announce ‘IV’ Out April 1st

f1f95118-9644-4bcc-8b61-22bbdca27004

The rock canon has many anti-heroes, Black Mountain being the latest. In the past, Can’s Tago Mago established that the only rule in rock and roll is that there are no rules. Pink Floyd’s prodigious output in the 70s showed us that architecture can be cool, while delinquent proto-metalers Black Sabbath demonstrated that you can make a lot from not that much.  Now Black Mountain teach us that you don’t have to be afraid of the past to move bravely into the future, defining what it is to be a classic rock band in the new millennium. Today, they announce IV, an unapologetically ambitious record made by a group of musicians who are at the peak of their powers.

The group’s sense of rediscovery as a creative whole is tangible throughout. Stephen McBean, Jeremy Schmidt, Amber Webber, and Joshua Wells were joined in the studio by spiritually attuned bassist and veteran purveyor of the riff, Arjan Miranda (formerly of S.T.R.E.E.T.S, Children, and The Family Band) whose roots, heart, and soul are connected to the same soil and cement that Black Mountain were borne from. Recording was primarily done in close collaboration with producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Marissa Nadler) at his trusted Avast! facility in Seattle. IV will be released on April 1st via Jagjaguwar,

Today, the band also announced a large tour in support of IV. Don’t miss a chance to catch this powerful band live.

WATCH // The Besnard Lakes’ “The Plain Moon” Video

The Besnard Lakes’ new album, A Coliseum Complex Museum, will be streaming in full starting next week ahead of its January 22nd release on Jagjaguwar. The band has already previewed album tracks “Golden Lion” and “The Plain Moon” in 2015. Today, they unveil “The Plain Moon” video directed by Joseph Yarmush and debuted via Noisey.

Accompanying the Noisey premiere is an interview with the band’s Olga Goreas who says, “We probably love the supernatural as much as the natural, and we’ve always been fascinated with more esoteric elements, especially with regards to capturing them visually. There are these sigils I created that are flashed in the video. Each one represents a different positive idea. I actually use them for meditation, and the notion is that you visualize them and they can be realized.”

Fifteen years into their career, with a new line up and a renewed sense of ambition, The Besnard Lakes have created a concise record that expands upon the luscious vocal harmonies, dense guitar-work and classic 70s melodicism for which they have gained huge critical acclaim. They are creating a larger narrative about what it means to be a classic rock band with a deep and rich catalogue in the 21st Century.

Starting next month, The Besnard Lakes will tour Canada and Europe. In London, they’ve planned a special performance with a 13-piece band at Islington Assembly Hall on April 5th. Before that, the band will stop in Brooklyn for an in-store at Rough Trade on January 23rd. The show is free with no wristband required and the band will be doing a signing session after. Stay tuned for more U.S. tour news coming soon.
