In October last year, Gabriel Garzón-Montano released his new album, Agüita, a collection of “tender acoustic ballads, silky R&B performance, and contemporary urbano swagger” (Pitchfork), via Jagjaguwar. The album was met with widespread acclaim, with TIME naming the album one of 2020’s best, stating Garzón-Montano is “an artist who understands his expertise while also pushing his bounds.”
On its release, Agüita was widely praised for its sequences of impossibly diverse offerings that ranged from trap anthems to string-drenched art-pop ballads. Bristling at the idea of genre which, as GGM states, “puts the music in a box,” he leads us on an ultra-personal journey through the three characters that constitute his personality: the debonair leading man, the wistful impressionist and the Latin Urbano hitmaker.
Today, GGM continues to celebrate Agüita by releasing a remix of the title track featuring powerful appearances by Sampa The Great & Amber Mark. As an avid adherent of both artists, GGM is thrilled to have the opportunity to present this fresh take on the album’s anthem. As a bonus for listeners, Garzón-Montano simultaneously releases yet another version of Agüita featuring Kevin Florez, the Champeta king from Cartagena.
Jagjaguwar is packaging both new remixes along with the half.cool remix of ‘Mira My Look’ featuring Andrekza, and the album versions of ‘Muñeca’, ‘Mira My Look’ and ‘Agüita’ to create an EP as a character study, spotlighting one of the many sides of GGM.
On the ‘Agüita’ remix, GGM said:
“This Agüita remix is special. Sampa and Amber came with their magic in usual form. Estoy muy agradecido a estas reinas por este remix. Un aguacero.”
Amber Mark, who appears on the ‘Agüita’ remix explained:
“I was speechless in absolute amazement when GGM played me the ‘Agüita’ demo years ago. He literally can tap into any sound he’s feeling and make it sound amazing. ‘Agüita’ is my motivational anthem; I’m so honored and excited that I get to be a part of this one.”
And Sampa The Great, who also appears on the remix, added:
“It’s always amazing to be able to connect across cultures and languages with music! Agüita is one of those dope songs that does that and it was amazing being part of this remix.”
