Unknown Mortal Orchestra Announce Jagjaguwar Debut, Out 2013

It’s official. Unknown Mortal Orchestra announce their sophomore album, II, the follow up to 2011′s esteemed debut. Think Pink Floyd, the Family Stone, The Beatles and Soft Machine shaken up and pushed through Ruban’s distorted rock’n’roll kaleidoscope. II came to be during Ruban’s long inhabitance of the perils intense touring often encapsulate. Themes of loneliness, love and despair surface on the new record, giving listeners a special lens to life on the road. II is out February 5, 2013.

A few weeks ago, we shared the first cut from II – the fantastic “Swim and Sleep (Like A Shark).” Go ahead a give that track another listen above. In addition to streaming, you can now purchase the once tour-exclusive “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)” b/w “Waves of Confidence” 7″ via iTunes.

READ // Spin Steps into the Studio with UMO

Last week we welcomed our newest signee, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, to the Jagjaguwar family. With a brand new album in the works, SPIN stepped into the studio with the UMO’s main man for a look at what’s to come. It’s the follow-up to UMO’s self-titled, debut release. Ruban gives insight to the new record’s origin: the road.

“There are a lot of weird shit that starts going through your head when you don’t get enough sleep, when you start indulging in stuff. There are a lot of weird ideas in there that, when I actually got my head together afterward, I was shocked: I didn’t realize how dark some of the lyrics had become.”

After writing the album, Ruban returned to his new home of Portland to begin recording before heading back out on the road with Grizzly Bear. “It was just me, locked up, sleeping during the day and making the record at night,” he shares.
