ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Black Mountain Announce ‘IV’ Out April 1st

f1f95118-9644-4bcc-8b61-22bbdca27004

The rock canon has many anti-heroes, Black Mountain being the latest. In the past, Can’s Tago Mago established that the only rule in rock and roll is that there are no rules. Pink Floyd’s prodigious output in the 70s showed us that architecture can be cool, while delinquent proto-metalers Black Sabbath demonstrated that you can make a lot from not that much.  Now Black Mountain teach us that you don’t have to be afraid of the past to move bravely into the future, defining what it is to be a classic rock band in the new millennium. Today, they announce IV, an unapologetically ambitious record made by a group of musicians who are at the peak of their powers.

The group’s sense of rediscovery as a creative whole is tangible throughout. Stephen McBean, Jeremy Schmidt, Amber Webber, and Joshua Wells were joined in the studio by spiritually attuned bassist and veteran purveyor of the riff, Arjan Miranda (formerly of S.T.R.E.E.T.S, Children, and The Family Band) whose roots, heart, and soul are connected to the same soil and cement that Black Mountain were borne from. Recording was primarily done in close collaboration with producer Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Wolves In The Throne Room, Marissa Nadler) at his trusted Avast! facility in Seattle. IV will be released on April 1st via Jagjaguwar,

Today, the band also announced a large tour in support of IV. Don’t miss a chance to catch this powerful band live.

“Me and Josh and Amber were in a different band with our friend Christoff [Hoffmeister, Jerk With a Bomb], we were touring around and we’d grown from a two-piece to a three-piece to a four-piece within three albums. During the last tour, we were essentially playing the first Black Mountain record. Then we kind of imploded and regrouped. I don’t know, it was weird. Basically, [Jerk] had recording time at the Hive booked and we were going to record and then Christoff got sick so then I used the time, as opposed to throwing it away, to record the first Pink Mountaintops record. And then Christoff left and then me and Josh [Wells] recorded a bunch of the first record at our space, and then Matt [Camirand] joined, and Jeremy [Schmidt] joined and then Amber [Webber] and we finished our first record at the Hive. It was an exciting time. – Black Mountain Founder Stephen McBean

LISTEN // New Black Mountain Single/Origin Song “Black Mountain (demo)”

This morning Stereogum premiered the second single released for the 10th Anniversary Edition of Black Mountain. The song “Black Mountain (demo)” wasn’t on the original album, but will be on the deluxe reissue.

Here’s what bandleader Stephen McBean said about the song:

Jerk With A Bomb was playing a show at Pat’s Pub in Vancouver. It must’ve been 2003. The night before I had a dream that if we were called Black Mountain we would become an unstoppable rock ‘n’ roll force. In the morning, a banner was created on a old sheet with a few jiffy markers and our opening theme song was composed. I believe we played it live a few more times enhanced with synchronized dance, then left it to rest for 10 odd years on a mini disc in a dusty box, but that evening through dream, banner and song Black Mountain was born.

The 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is a double-LP including 8 bonus tracks on limited edition colored vinyl, using foil-print on the first pressing of the litho-wrap gatefold packaging. The records themselves are limited-edition color matched grey double vinyl, as well as standard black vinyl and double disc CD, which are also available with limited edition foil-printing. It includes the original classic album paired with the Druganaut 12″ plus 4 previously unreleased tracks.

ALBUM RELEASE // Pink Mountaintops’ ‘Get Back’ Out Now, US Tour Starts Wednesday

Today we are excited to announce the worldwide release of Pink Mountaintops’ new album, Get Back. Stephen McBean cites influences for his latest release as “Alleys, curbs, walls, and cigarette-stained gig flyers. An island on the Pacific coast. Fake British towns. Slayer posters. The beauty of youth. It’s about listening to ‘Driver’s Seat’ and ‘Guns of Brixton’ and hotboxing The Duster.”

Joe Cardomone, known for his work with The Icarus Line, produced the new release. Get Back includes a wealth of talented Los Angeles musicians including J Mascis, Gregg Foreman, Daniel Allaire, Stephen Kille, and Rob Barbato. To finish up the record, Stephen called upon Randal Dunn who mixed it at Avast! Studios in Seattle and Howie Weinburg who mastered it in Laurel Canyon.

Listen to a preview of the new record above or on our Soundcloud here.

Read Interview Magazine‘s piece on Stephen where they interview him about leaving Vancouver for LA, the new album, and his early musical influences.

Get Back is available now via iTunes, SC Distribution, Amazon, and your local record store.

See what critics are saying about the new album:

“The record once again proves that rock is hard to define and often is whatever one wants it to be, at least as long as there’s a guitar, youthful spirit, and maybe a stage dive involved.”
Popstache

“The Pink Mountaintops’ fourth long-player is dense, difficult, intoxicating, and bereft of a single dull moment.”
AllMusic

“Stephen McBean is just one of those dudes, one of the many guys who inspires equal amounts of applause and jealousy because his projects always, in the truest sense of the word, rock.”
Music OMH
