WATCH // ‘Best Blues’ Released Worldwide, Small Black Share “No One Wants It To Happen To You” Video

Kolenik is hovering somewhere above and beyond us, commenting omnisciently yet powerlessly on human folly and loss. It’s a testament to Small Black’s knack for pop architecture that the band can make it all sound so breezy.”
NPR Music

Small Black’s new album, Best Blues, is out today on Jagjaguwar after streaming in full via NPR Music’s First Listen series the past week. In celebration of release day, the band is sharing a new video for the album’s second single, “No One Wants It To Happen To You,” via NYLON.

Director William Colby says,

“With the video, I wanted to explore our complex relationship with water: We are in awe of it, we need it to live, yet it can kill us and destroy our homes. Through juxtaposing and blending water footage with an intimate performance, I attempted to tie this idea into the main themes of the band’s album.”

Small Black is currently on tour in support of Best Blues and a full list of dates is below. They cap off their North American run with two headline shows in their hometown of Brooklyn at Baby’s All Right on November 20th and 21st.

LISTEN // Small Black Streams ‘Best Blues’ Via NPR Music

JAG269

Small Black’s new album, Best Blues, is currently streaming via NPR Music’s First Listen series ahead of its October 16th release on Jagjaguwar. The band’s third full-length release was written and recorded at their Brooklyn home studio and mixed by Nicholas Vernhes (War on Drugs, Deerhunter) of Rare Book Room Studio. Lead single “Boys Life” is an absolute stunner having racked up over 480,000 Spotify plays and 332,000 SoundCloud streams and spending ample time in Sirius XMU’s Top 10 and on the Hype Machine popular chart. Best Blues finds Small Black in their sweet spot: the smoky intersection of considered and vulnerable songwriting and loose, almost nonchalant ambience.

The addition of piano flourishes, trumpet (Darby Cicci of The Antlers), hidden acoustic guitars and Kaede Ford’s ethereal vocals provide new dimensions to the band’s already expansive sonic palette. Cut-to-the-chase rippers “Back at Belle’s” and “Checkpoints” embody and build on the group’s signature gritty yet focused electronic sound. While the more pastoral tracks, such as “Between Leos,” and “XX Century,” skeletally based on recorded improvisations, find the band painting a more nuanced, assured aural portrait. The repeating of the line “twentieth century” on closer “XX Century” serves as a coda for the album, offering a simple summation of what Best Blues intent has been from the opening Casio stab: an attempt to re-examine the past, but also one to let it go.

WATCH // Small Black Share Video For “Boys Life”

Small Black shares a stunning new video for their spectacular lead single, “Boys Life,” from their forthcoming album, Best Blues (out October 16th on Jagjaguwar). Premiered by The FADER, the video was directed by the inimitable Nick Bentgen who has been working with the band since its inception in 2009. Starting with the Despicable Dogs video from the Small Black EP, Bengten and the band have collaborated on three other videos since then.

Small Black lead singer Josh Kolenik says of Bentgen, “He functions almost as a fifth band member, assigning images to the sounds that come out of our heads, populating them with sprawling casts and endless locales, yet never missing the quiet moment. With ‘Boys Life,’ he’s getting at a simple reflection on being young, and the many identities we all try out on our paths to figuring out how we might be. Falling through the city on the way to our lives.

The “Boys Life” video perfectly captures the vibrancy and freshness of Small Black’s music proving that on their third album they are still evolving and embracing the unpredictable. The result is Small Black in their sweet spot: the smoky intersection of considered and vulnerable songwriting and loose, almost nonchalant ambience.

Small Black’s new album, Best Blues, is set for release on October 16th via Jagjaguwar. They’ve already shared the seismic lead single, “Boys Life,” which shot up the Hype Machine popular chart and is currently in Sirius XMU’s Top 10. Today, they unveil their pristine new single, “No One Wants It To Happen To You,” via SPIN.

Lead singer Josh Kolenik says of the song, “‘No One Wants It To Happen To You’ was meant as a mantra. Something an older, wiser friend told you once that you might cling to in order to get through a terrible situation. The phrase you keep folded up in your pocket, letting you know better will surely come.

Simple and plain spoken, it’s about separating yourself from yourself and taking a second to stand and gape at the bottom, knowing that you might be there for awhile, but that it is a place from which you can rise,” he continues.

Best Blues finds the band in their sweet spot: the smoky intersection of considered and vulnerable songwriting and loose, almost nonchalant ambience. The music of “No One Wants It To Happen To You” sits right at the aesthetic heart of Best Blues, focused on acoustic guitar and piano, adding real space to the dreamscape Small Black have been designing from day one.
