WATCH // New Unknown Mortal Orchestra Video For “Ur Life One Night,” Summer Tour Dates

With a bolstered sound that incorporates funk-infused synths and emotionally charged lyrics, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s third album, Multi-Love, is their strongest to date. Now, the band is proud to share a brand new video for the track “Ur Life One Night” (premiered on Rolling Stone), featuring a vast and kaleidoscopic collection of stories, colors, and visual effects. Director Manoj Leonel Jahson sought out inspiration in Traditional Asian Art through the incorporation of Mughai-era miniature paintings and more. Here is what he had to say about the film:

“When we first spoke with UMO, the idea of creating something abstract yet fun, for their single ‘Ur Life, One Night’ sounded very exciting. I am deeply inspired by the quirky Indian magical-realism from our mythology and wanted to create something rooted but still visually appealing. The music lent a dream-like quality and the lyric pushed us to the motif of the Goddess being pursued, yet always being out of reach.”

After being praised as a standout performance at Bonnaroo and touring all through May and June, UMO return to the road with performances across the U.S. and Europe. Upcoming tour dates include a stops at Austin City Limits, Outside Lands, and FYF festivals. Multi-Love is out now via Jagjaguwar. All tour dates are below:

“The Oregon trio aren’t just for acid-trip casualties anymore. On their third album, they punch up their psychedelic sound with funky grooves and singer Ruban Nielson’s tales of polyamory and alienation in the age of Portlandia.”Entertainment Weekly (“12 Best Albums of 2015 (So Far)”)

“Brighter and more polished than the band’s ever sounded.”Billboard

“Names aren’t named, but the intimacy, awkwardness and emotional nakedness on display might have been hard to take were they not wrapped in the sweetest, catchiest, most impeccably crafted music Unknown Mortal Orchestra has made.”NPR Music

Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s forthcoming third LP, Multi-Love, is Ruban Nielson’s strongest record yet, a sublime mash of psychedelia and R&B that incredibly evokes a Stevie Wonder — that is, if Stevie Wonder was from New Zealand and strongly considered the existence of chemtrails.”The FADER

“Funk has sashayed its way back into the forefront of music, and almost no one is incorporating it better than Unknown Mortal Orchestra.Stereogum

LISTEN // Unknown Mortal Orchestra Share Track “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone” Via Vulture, Album ‘Multi-Love’ Out 5/26

Today via Vulture, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the freshest glimpse into one of the most anticipated records of the year, Multi-Love, out May 26th on Jagjaguwar. “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone” is perhaps one of the most surprising songs on the new record (their third full-length). It features four-on-the-floor beats, handclaps, and acrobatic bass-lines, a song that could feel at home on a Georgio Moroder record, and further highlights Ruban Nielson’s refinement as a vocalist. It’s the most dance floor-ready song UMO has made to date. Nielson had this to say of the song:

“Cant Keep Checking My Phone” is about missing somebody and that point where you refuse to accept online “connectivity” as a substitute for being with someone IRL. When someone you love turns into text and ideas delivered through a device, at some point they’re competing with real things like the aurora borealis, which is another thing that only really makes sense in the flesh. I also read somewhere that the universe might be holographic, and in that case maybe the distance between us is just an illusion. So do you fall in love with the idea of someone? Or the chemicals they give off in person? Either way, I’ve got to get off my phone.

Also, Ruban has shared the lyrics to “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone.” Check them out on his Instagram here

ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Unknown Mortal Orchestra Announce New Album ‘Multi-Love’ Out May 26th, Listen To The Title Track Now

The threads of our past never unravel, they hover like invisible webs, occasionally glistening due to a sly angle of the sun. On Multi-Love, Unknown Mortal Orchestra frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson reflects on relationships: airy, humid longing, loss, the geometry of desire that occurs when three people align. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together.UMO’s new album is out May 26th on Jagjaguwar. Listen to title track “Multi-Love” above or on our SoundCloud page and YouTube..

Pre-order Multi-Love via SCD/direct, Amazon, iTunes, your local record store.

Multi-Love adds dimensions to the band’s already kaleidoscopic approach, with Nielson exploring a newfound appreciation for synthesizers. The new songs channel the spirit of psych innovators without ignoring the last 40 years of music, forming a flowing, cohesive whole that reflects restless creativity. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson’s vocals reach powerful new heights.

“It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” says Ruban. “It’s more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren’t quite like anyone else’s. I think that’s much more subversive.”

While legions of artists show fidelity to the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre’s touchstones so vital: constant exploration.

Additionally, US and UK tour dates have been announced, and will go on pre-sale on Friday. Full dates + track listing after the jump.

WATCH // UMO Performs Live for OPBmusic

Ruban Nielson stopped by OPBmusic to perform a stripped down version of II standout track, “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark).” Can you believe Ruban just acquired an acoustic guitar within the last couple of months? It’s hard for us to. Become mesmerized – stream the song above!

Unknown Mortal Orchestra are currently on tour with Foxygen and Wampire, playing Austin’s Mohawk tonight. You can find all their dates HERE.

“Unknown Mortal Orchestra were one of those live acts that could make it feel like an actual orchestra was rampaging through a place. Though there were only three people playing away on stage, their powerful brand of spacey psychedelic rock/pop was impossible to not focus on. The music they played ranged from sing-a-long songs for hallucinogenic drug lovers and people who seek to live out the lyrical scenarios told by Juicy J to material that felt like a condensed version of smoky kraut-rock and jam band grooves.”OC Weekly
