Okkervil River and Roky Erickson played an Ice Cream Social to possibly their youngest audience to date (although sharing music with youth is a passion Will Sheff has shown before). Sponsored by Ice Cream Man and the FYF Festival, the event was open to all ages, and the kids came out in numbers, digging into free scoops of ice cream as they listened to Roky and Okkervil River perform. While some seemed more interested in the ice cream than the music, there were definitely some discerning listeners in the bunch. When the band opened up the floor for a Q&A, Roky and crew fielded such questions as “Why is the Zombie song so loud?” and “What’s your opinion on ukuleles?” (!) And when one little girl was asked “is this your first rock show?” her mother quickly secured her child’s hipster cred by interjecting “oh, she went to see Patti Smith,” discerning indeed! All and all this was a wonderful wonderful event that makes all those dark bar shows drab in comparison and begs the question of why more rock n’ roll can’t be a family affair? It’s been a while and we hope you are doing well. We have been taking a little bit of a breather over the past few months — reconnecting with family and friends, renovating houses and building chicken coops, and – most importantly – writing and recording a new Okkervil River album that should be ready early next year.
In the meantime though, we are getting ready for the release of our collaborative album with Roky Erickson, True Love Cast Out All Evil, which comes out April 20th on Anti Records; The album consists of original material from Roky Erickson with Okkervil River as the backing band and Will Sheff as producer. Visit the site at www.truelovecastoutallevil.com for more information.
This spring Okkervil River joins 13th Floor Elevator frontman and psychedelia legend Roky Erickson as the backing band on his first album in fifteen years. Okkervil and Erickson teamed up on the forthcoming True Love Cast Out All Evil, due out April 20.
