Richard Youngs Releases New ‘Rurtain’ 12″ via ALTER

Richard Youngs recently released a new electronic 12″ via London-based record label Alter. Titled Rurtain, the a-side features two long-form works. Neil Campbell (Astral Social Club), John Clyde-Evans and Daniel Lopatin (Oneohtrix Point Never) lend their musical talents to the album’s b-side, each sharing their own remix on Richard’s originals. It’s a limited release – only 300 copies available! Order yours from Alter. Listen to “Rurtain (Shonny Don).”

To celebrate the new release, Alter is hosting a special event at Cafe Oto on October 19 with an exclusive trio performance from Richard Youngs, Neil Campbell and John Clyde-Evans. Details HERE.

“It finds Youngs operating in a mode that’s several leagues from the poppier sounds of his best known work (the likes of Beyond The Valley of Ultrahits). Instead its longform title track, split into two parts – ‘Rurtain (Shonny Don)’ and ‘Rurtain (Keyomarno)’, finds him collaging percussion, wisps of his own voice and stately organ figures into disorienting and immersive patchwork quilt electronica.” – The Quietus

And for anybody curious in learning more about Richard Youngs The Quietus did a super in-depth interview w/ Richard this week which you can read HERE.

Happy Release Day Richard Youngs! Stream Amplifying Host All This Week On Spinner

Today marks the release of Richard Youngs’ eleventh Jagjaguwar release Amplifying Host. Over his long career we have gotten to know Youngs’ music intimately, yet he still never ceases to surprise us. As Dusted Magazine puts it Youngs is “one of the few modern songwriters to actively challenge his own preconceptions of his art.”

All this week you can stream Amplifying Host at Spinner.com RIGHT HERE.

Hear what Spin Magazine says evokes “the moonlit tumbleweed vistas of an acid Western.” The Onion calls “Amplifying Host‘s gaunt improvisation and gauzy textures orbit atonality even as they sketch the silhouette of a haunted, dust-blown folk.” And Tiny Mix Tapes in a particularly beautiful and personal review says “Youngs’ music sounds broken here, but as with Jandek’s utterly unique take on rock ‘n’ roll its brokeness creates a sound that is thrillingly expressive in its difficulty.”

Richard Youngs Releases Limited Vinyl-Only “Long White Cloud” LP on Grapefruit Records

A guest blog post by Jagjaguwar alum Simon Joyner:

I haven’t participated in the running of a record label since 1997, when Chris Deden and I stopped releasing music on Sing, Eunuchs! Records. We found that the main problem running a small, independent label was that the majority of independent distributors refused to pay us after they sold our records, despite numerous phone calls, faxes, and threatening letters. There was an understood convention of withholding payment on sold goods until the label released another title the distributor wanted to carry. It seemed criminal and against the spirit of the whole independent music ethos but it was how things were done. Bigger independent labels could afford to subsidize their distributors by waiting on funds until the next record came out but we actually needed the money from the previous release just to fund the next record. It was a dispiriting, debt-ridden situation and when we hung up our hats after five years I vowed never to run a record label again unless I could circumvent what I considered an unfair distribution system.
