Supreme Dicks “Breathing and Not Breathing” OUT TODAY

Supreme Dicks entire catalog is now available from Jagjaguwar! There’s the 4 CD boxset, Breathing and Not Breathing, which includes both of the band’s studio albums, The Unexamined Life and The Emotional PlagueWorkingman’s Dick, a collection of early archival recordings; and the EP This Is Not A Dick, which has additional rare and unreleased tracks; as well as 2xLP editions of The Unexamined Life and The Emotional Plague. All for order right here.

The Stranger calls Breathing and Not Breathing “a glorious four-CD box set spanning one of Massachusetts’s gloomiest-ever bodies of work. Listen to ‘Jack-O-Lantern’ and try to deny it doesn’t rival Pavement in the birth of that sound.” Matt Fiander at Prefix explains what makes the Dicks so special: “They sound honest. In all this weirdness, there’s not a shred of pretension to it…If being underground is about not being exposed (as De La Soul put it so well) then Supreme Dicks were as underground as they could be. They didn’t rise to the surface to greet us, they summoned us to dig to them. And, in the end, we thanked them for the dirt under our nails…My recommendation: Get it all.

Supreme Dicks Reissue Complete Recordings on Jagjaguwar

Jagjaguwar is thrilled to announce the reissue of the complete Supreme Dicks catalog on October 18 (October 17 UK). Rising out of the Amherst, MA scene that produced Dinosaur Jr, Supreme Dicks were vital contributors to the lo-fi and avant garde genres. The band’s constantly revolving lineup (Lou Barlow was a Dick now and again) centered around Daniel Oxenberg, Jon Shere, Steve Shavel, Mark Hanson, and Jim Spring, whose psychedelic-yet-twangy brand of rock’n’roll came out of the band’s roots at Hampshire College in the Reagan era.

To celebrate the release there are two free MP3s available today! You can find “Jack-O-Lantern” at Altered Zones and “In a Sweet Song” at RCRD LBL.

The complete recordings will be reissued as a 4 CD box set called “Breathing and Not Breathing.” This will include both of the band’s studio albums, The Unexamined Life and The Emotional PlagueWorkingman’s Dick, a collection of early archival recordings; and the EPThis Is Not A Dick, which has been fleshed out with rare and unreleased tracks. Also available are 2xLP editions of The Unexamined Life and The Emotional Plague. Cover art & track listings after the jump.

MONROE MUSTANG Digitally Reissue First And Third Records

Somehow ahead of and behind the times all at once, Monroe Mustang’s debut album “Plain Sweeping Themes For The Unprepared”, has been reincarnated for the digital age by Jagjaguwar. One of the most underrated albums released by Austin’s Trance Syndicate/Emperor Jones recording conglomerate, the original home of the Mustang’s slo-fi sympathizers Bedhead and American Analog Set. Monroe Mustang uses home recordings to evoke a timeless brand of melodic songsmithery that’s as easy to imbibe then as it is now. The band that time forgot: Brian Barry, Taylor Holland, Christopher Linnen, Michael Linnen, and Jason Stout, share singing and songwriting duties while rotating instruments – both onstage and in their backyard studio. This is headphone music for aficionados of adventurous, woozy, classic rock and the space where pop veers toward the strange. An excellent antidote for hurting heads. Best administered when somnambulant sounds are most desired.

Also reissued is Monroe’s Iced-over and left for dead second release on Austin’s Trance Syndicate/Emperor Jones recording conglomerate. All five members, Brian Barry, Taylor Holland, Christopher Linnen, Michael Linnen, and Jason Stout, share singing and songwriting duties while rotating instruments — both onstage and in their home studio. Originally conceived as a concept album, each band member wrote, recorded, and produced their own song for this 5 song E.P. An odd collection that highlights the propensities of each of the Mustangs, veering from lo-fi-new-wave, to acoustic dirge, to sublime pop.
