Two New Songs from Okkervil River’s Will Sheff

Okkervil River’s Will Sheff recently played a solo show at The Living Room in New York. During the set he broke out two new songs “Walked Out On A Line” and “Lay of the Last Survivor” which you can watch below. Whether these songs will appear on the next Okkervil River record only the future knows, but the strength of these songs is evident, even with only the bare bones accompaniment of Will’s acoustic guitar. Good signs of things to come! Those of you in the Seattle-area can catch Okkervil River live September 11 at Maymoor Park opening for The National.

Peter Wolf Crier Perform at NPR, Tour with Dawes, Vetiver

Picture 7

Earlier this summer as Peter Wolf Crier made their first jaunt to the east coast they popped down to Washington DC for a day at the NPR studios. They performed at the desk of Bob Boilen as part of their long-standing “Tiny Desk Performances” series. Peter and Brian trimmed down their set to the acoustic essentials playing “Untitled 101,” and “Saturday Night” before closing with album stand out “Crutch & Cane.” Boilen himself said of the session “I love watching these guys play, which is why I was glad they could come play the Tiny Desk. Pisano’s passion might be in his voice, but watch his face turn blood-red and take a look at what Moen is doing: He looks blissed-out at times, while his accents propel the vocals as much as they do the guitar lines.” Check out the entire performance HERE.

Peter Wolf Crier continue to be a part of some of the best tours of the year. First touring with Freelance Whales, and then Heartless Bastards, we recently announced that starting in September Peter Wolf Crier will join Rogue Wave and Midlake on their fall tour. Today we add to this. Peter Wolf Crier will join Dawes, and on some dates Vetiver as well, on their fall tour. Full tour dates after the jump.

The Hippest Kids Listen To Okkervil River

Picture 3

Okkervil River and Roky Erickson played an Ice Cream Social to possibly their youngest audience to date (although sharing music with youth is a passion Will Sheff has shown before). Sponsored by Ice Cream Man and the FYF Festival, the event was open to all ages, and the kids came out in numbers, digging into free scoops of ice cream as they listened to Roky and Okkervil River perform. While some seemed more interested in the ice cream than the music, there were definitely some discerning listeners in the bunch. When the band opened up the floor for a Q&A, Roky and crew fielded such questions as “Why is the Zombie song so loud?” and “What’s your opinion on ukuleles?” (!) And when one little girl was asked “is this your first rock show?” her mother quickly secured her child’s hipster cred by interjecting “oh, she went to see Patti Smith,” discerning indeed!  All and all this was a wonderful wonderful event that makes all those dark bar shows drab in comparison and begs the question of why more rock n’ roll can’t be a family affair? Peter Wolf Crier Perform Intimate Radio Session for WGTB

P1030014.JPG

Last week when Peter Wolf Crier toured through Washington DC they had time to stop by WGTB, Georgetown University’s radio station and play a few songs. Peter Wolf Crier played “For Now,” “Crutch and Cane,” “Saturday Night,” and “Untitled 101″ in a stripped down and more restrained fashion. As you listen to these live versions the simple beauty and intimacy of these songs really unfold. On the really good days in this biz real magic happens, and this session is a good example of just that. You can streampeter-wolf-crier-crutch-and-cane all four songs from the session over at WGTB’s blog.
