Dinosaur Jr Announce New Album – “I Bet on Sky,” Kick Off North American Tour Later this Month

Some exciting news people! It’s been 27 years and ten studio albums, but Dinosaur Jr show no signs of stopping. Today they announce a brand new record, the third since the original trio of J Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph regrouped in 2005. Titled I Bet on Sky, it’s out on September 18th.

“There is nothing quite like a Dinosaur Jr. album. The best ones are always recognizable from the first notes. And even though J tries to trip us up by smearing “Don’t Pretend You Didn’t Know” with keyboards, it’s clear from the moment he starts his vocals that this is the one and only Dinosaur Jr., long reigning kings of Amherst, Massachusetts (and anywhere else they choose to hang their toques).” -Byron Coley

See Dinosaur Jr live in concert. In addition to over 25 venue shows, they’ll play Green Music, 80/35 Music, MidPoint Music, LouFest 2012 and Pygmalion Festivals. All dates listed below! Read the rest of this entry »

Oneida Complete the Thank Your Parents triptych with Absolute II

The O is back, and this time it’s Absolute.

Absolute II is the final piece in Oneida’s Thank Your Parents triptych of releases, begun in 2008 with Preteen Weaponry and followed by 2009’s acclaimed triple disc Rated O. With this release, the Brooklyn group concludes a challenging and profound long-term project. The Thank Your Parents triptych, totaling around 200 minutes, is intended to be listened to as a whole or in its component parts.Absolute II stands on its own, in addition to serving as a chapter in an immense whole.

The music on Absolute II is startling, rigorous and demanding. Oneida is a band that has been strongly identified with the frenetic, fluid drumming of Kid Millions and the relentless pulse of classic Krautrock, but this release contains neither audible drums nor identifiable “rock” music. The recordings move freely across accepted boundaries of rhythm, harmony, and tonality – not in the form of dramatic, willful experiment, but as a musical distillation of several themes that have emerged in the wake of Rated O’s dynamism: paralysis, entropy, stasis, possibility, and finality among them. Absolute II will be available June 7 in digital and vinyl formats. Oneida has set up a Bandcamp page which gives a complete overview of the Thank Your Parents series with audio from all three releases including Absolute II available for preview. You can check it out HERE.

In addition to the release of Absolute II, October 1 brings “Oneida Presents the Ocropolis III” at All Tomorrow’s Parties “I’ll Be Your Mirror” to Asbury Lanes Bowling Alley in Asbury Park, New Jersey. Oneida will perform continuously throughout the day, sometimes with guests from other groups performing at the festival, sometimes alone and mostly improvised. Read more about all the events at ATP’s “I’ll Be Your Mirror” HERE.
