GOOD LORD! This is just about the best tv performance ever, right? This is the first public performance of the great Bon Iver song “Holocene” – both a venue in Portland where Justin Vernon once had a rough night and also our current geological epoch.
Justin talks about Holocene in his NPR Morning Edition interview (titled “Bon Iver gets Bigger and More Complex”) that ran yesterday here.
Today Bon Iver released a music video for the first single, “Calgary.” It was written by Justin Vernon and filmed at April Base Studios in Fall Creek, WI, directed by Andre Durand and Dan Huiting and produced by Daniel Cummings and Picture Machine Productions. I stopped watching America’s Next Top Model a few years ago, but the woman in the video (Raina Hein) was one of the two finalists in Cycle 14. There is a picture of her spooning the magnificent dog who lives at April Base, Gordon, on her website. Gordon should have a blog. Moving on…
Bon Iver is playing two television shows with the full 9-piece band next week. Monday, June 20th, is a performance on The Colbert Report and Tuesday the 21st (release day!!!) is Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
The Fallon show is offering Bon Iver fans a chance to be close to the performance. If you click on the link below you will be directed to enter the “Band Bench” contest where you win seats on the band benches that surround the stage during the performance. Click here and enter the band code “BIV” in your entry.
One last thing: yesterday I mentioned that Bon Iver was on the cover of the July issue of SPIN. Today that article is now available to read online. Go! Read it!
The touring band for Bon Iver will be 9 members strong and include some of the best humans walking the earth. They are still putting the finishing touches on the live versions of the new Bon Iver, Bon Iver material, so Late Night With Jimmy Fallon offered to have Justin come on and perform the b-side to the “Calgary” 12″ – Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” with a dash of “Nick of Time.” Justin had a sweet couch interview with Jimmy and performed a little medley with Phil Cook on piano.
The interview video doesn’t show this, but it’s pretty awesome – as Justin walked out for his interview, and the Roots played the theme song from Northern Exposure. For all the Bon Iver n00bs – the name originates from an episode of Northern Exposure (one of Justin’s favorite shows). You can see the current cover of Billboard and the future cover of SPIN Magazine in the interview. Has a more GQ dude ever existed?
I was standing at the back of the room and almost passed out. So inspiring and incredible. Tears and hugs, guys, this is a special performance.
After the jump you can see some snaps from yesterday. Please pre-order the new album HERE.
The pre-order for Bon Iver, Bon Iver is now live! There are several different packages of the record and pre-order bonuses here. Click above to download the first single from the album, “Calgary.”
Last night Okkervil River premiered a new song “Wake and Be Fine” on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Joining Okkervil River for the performance were members of The Roots and the New Pornograpers’ A.C. Newman. Jimmy Fallon also announced that the song is from a new Okkervil River album titled I Am Very Far which will be out on Jagjaguwar May 10. More details on that soon mighty Okkervil fans.
