It is the balance of the abstract and intimate that makes Briana Marela and her debut for Jagjaguwar, All Around Us, so special. The 25-year-old Washington native draws inspiration from the people around her – the emotions they evoke, the tactile feelings those emotions bring us: the warmth of affection; the weightlessness of joy; the grounded, anchored feeling of love. There is a sense of place in her music, too – a sense of nature, of the northwest, and of the unique space that exists between cities and wilderness. That gift for illuminating the abstract is counterbalanced by a remarkable clarity and forcefulness in Marela’s lyrics.

Marela began writing music on an acoustic guitar in early high school, never imagining she’d make music using computers someday. It wasn’t until Briana left Seattle that she turned her efforts toward music technology, audio production and composition. Learning about the manipulation of melody, vocals and sound is what ultimately drove her and influenced her pop compositions.

Produced and recorded by Sigur Rós producer Alex Somers in Reykjavic and featuring strings by Amiina, All Around Us feels mysterious at first, but reveals itself to be a record of remarkable honesty, and of direct, deeply felt emotions. It’s about relationships with people, about friendship, about improving oneself and finding the bravery to feel, give and show love. This is evident through debut single “Surrender,” a perfect introduction to Marela and the magic of her collaboration with Somers. “Surrender” is delicate at first, with flickering blips and chords that float into earshot like fireflies. As drums and vocals build, the drama escalates and steepens until we are struck with one bold, mantra-like affirmation: “I’ll give you all I’ve got.”

Briana Marela’s All Around Us is out August 21st and available for pre-order now. All digital pre-orders come with a free, instant download of debut single, “Surrender.” Briana will play her first New York club shows next month – Monday, June 1st at Baby’s All Right and Tuesday, June 2nd at Achilles Heel. She’ll tour North America supporting Jenny Hval this summer. All dates are below.

“The first single off the album is an abstract and kinetic love song called “Surrender,” which is built upon a yearning heart, a whorl of strings by Amiina, a pitter-patter of percussion by Samuli Kosminen (of múm), and some lush vocal looping.”The FADER

LISTEN // Unknown Mortal Orchestra ‘Multi-Love’ Streaming on NPR ‘First Listen’ and CBC ‘First Play’

JAG262-UMO_FC-1425

Next week marks the release of Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s third and most revolutionary full-length, Multi-Love, out 5/26 on Jagjaguwar. This week, NPR Music is sharing a stream of the record one-week prior to release via their First Listen feature, while, in Canada, CBC First Play is sharing the record with their audience. Also, for those who haven’t come across it yet, Pitchfork published an amazing and revealing look into the life and inspiration of frontman Ruban Nielson; it’s a MUST READ.

UMO just completed a stretch of warm-up shows in the Pacific Northwest in preparation for a six-week tour of Europe and the US, and by all accounts, impressed mightily. The Eugene Weekly said UMO

“proved versatile and adaptive, unafraid of pinning a disco undercarriage to the raw, ethereal fuzz of their live sound. This is a talented band on the upswing, and they compel movement.”

Be sure to catch the band on their upcoming tour, and don’t wait to get tickets, as shows are selling out in advance.

LISTEN // Sharon Van Etten Shares “Just Like Blood”, “I Don’t Want To Let You Down” EP Out June 9th

“Sharon Van Etten could sing the instruction manual for a dishwasher and make it sound like lyrical poetry. Over the course of four full-lengths, her voice has only evolved and grown both bolder and more nuanced. Van Etten plays every word like an instrument, bending one note into the next with a woozy purr that’s sometimes sensual, sometimes heartbreaking but always arresting.”
NPR Music’s “Songs We Love”

Couldn’t agree more. That’s why we’ve been working on Sharon Van Etten’s next project ‘Sharon Sings Your Favorite Instructional Manuals” EP for a while now. In the meantime, check out new track “Just Like Blood” from the upcoming “I Don’t Want To Let You Down” EP, out 6/3 via Jagjaguwar. This second single is as sophisticated and evolved as anything Van Etten has ever created. Listen above or on our SoundCloud page.

EP ANNOUNCE // Sharon Van Etten Announces “I Don’t Want To Let You Down” EP Out June 9th

jag266dig1

Sharon Van Etten has never needed much room to make a grand statement. With four albums diligently released during the last six years, she’s become one of music’s most astute new cartographers of the heart, able to capture emotional trials and triumphs with incisive lines and a voice that loses nothing in the translation and transmission of feelings. Her second record, epic, needed only seven tracks to live up to its title. Her subsequent albums, 2012’s Tramp and last year’s Are We There, went longer, but Van Etten managed still to squeeze enormous sentiments into especially small spaces. From start to rising stardom, Van Etten has forever understood the impact of economy.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Van Etten’s forthcoming five-song EP, I Don’t Want to Let You Down, functions as much more than some between-albums, on-tour stopgap. In only 22 minutes, Van Etten offers documents of surrender and disappointment, admission and longing. The songs are as sophisticated and evolved as anything Van Etten has ever done. Produced by Van Etten and Are We There producing partner Stewart Lerman, the EP features a sterling crew of collaborators: Heather Woods Broderick (keyboards, strings, vocals), Doug Keith (guitar), Zeke Hutchins (drums), Brad Cook (bass), Darren Jesse (drums), Peter Broderick (strings), Stuart Bogie (woodwinds), and The War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel (guitar) and Dave Hartley (bass).

Sharon Van Etten I Don’t Want to Let You Down EP is out June 9th on Jagjaguwar and available for pre-order now. An instant free download of the title track, debuted in January on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, comes with each digital pre-order. Surrounding the release of the EP, Sharon will play select festivals and tour South America. Full tour dates after the jump.

Pre-Order I Don’t Want to Let You Down via SC Distribution, Amazon, iTunes, or your local record store.
