Last week we welcomed our newest signee, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, to the Jagjaguwar family. With a brand new album in the works, SPIN stepped into the studio with the UMO’s main man for a look at what’s to come. It’s the follow-up to UMO’s self-titled, debut release. Ruban gives insight to the new record’s origin: the road.
“There are a lot of weird shit that starts going through your head when you don’t get enough sleep, when you start indulging in stuff. There are a lot of weird ideas in there that, when I actually got my head together afterward, I was shocked: I didn’t realize how dark some of the lyrics had become.”
After writing the album, Ruban returned to his new home of Portland to begin recording before heading back out on the road with Grizzly Bear. “It was just me, locked up, sleeping during the day and making the record at night,” he shares.
The Jagjaguwar family is out-of-this-world excited to announce the signing of Unknown Mortal Orchestra! Led by songwriter and guitarist Ruban Nielson, UMO is a perfect concoction of psychedlia and soul. Bassist Jacob Portrait and drummer Greg Rogrove round out the line-up.
Today, we have the great pleasure of sharing their first single “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark).”Premiering this morning at The Fader, the single is a nod to their forthcoming album, expected for release in early 2013. Stream below!
UMO will join Grizzly Bear as support for their September dates! They’ll then go on to tour throughout the fall, with stops at Pygmalion, Midpoint Music, Corona Capital, Rhythm and Alps, Pyramid Rock and Peats Ridge Sustainable Arts & Music festivals! Full list of dates below! The gang will also have a tour-exclusive 7″, featuring an a-side of “Swim and Sleep (Like a Shark)” and a b-side of “Waves of Confidence.”
