Anyone who has heard GAYNGS is already familiar with Justin Vernon’s soulful side, but an audience at Duke University got a special show this weekend as the Bon Iver frontman joined Megafaun to reinterpret the “Sounds of the South.”

Three nights of performances by Megafaun and Fight the Big Bull paid homage to Alan Lomax’s 1959 field recordings that resulted in the Sounds of the South song collection. Justin and Sharon Van Etten joined the lineup as special guests, and produced what a writer for Duke’s performance blog called “moments of radiant beauty.” From Duke’s performance blog, The Thread, “…Vernon took a soulful lead vocal on Fred McDowell’s “When I Get Home,” backed by a heavily bearded trio of R&B-style backup singers who might consider a side career as ‘ZZ Pips.'”

Sounds like an awe-inspiring show! According to the Duke blog, these performances were recorded, so we’ll be patiently waiting for the recordings to surface. Read more about the Duke Performances and see photos from the show HERE.
