WATCH // Video Premier for Briana Marela’s “Surrender”

“It doesn’t take much for Briana Marela to conjure a sound that’ll make you see colors.” Flavorwire

[Surrender] manages to evoke both the majesty and the more playful sylvan spirit of each of this record’s sonic homes.”NPR Music’s All Songs Considered

“The first single off the album is an abstract and kinetic love song called ‘Surrender,’ which is built upon a yearning heart, a whorl of strings by Amiina, a pitter-patter of percussion by Samuli Kosminen (of múm), and some lush vocal looping.”The FADER

“Hooking up with Sigur Rós producer Alex Somers, Marela has crafted one of the year’s most enjoyably ethereal efforts with her upcoming full-length, All Around Us, a lovely collection of shuffling ballads and near-choral ambience.”SPIN (Five Artists to Watch in June 2015]
’Surrender,’ the first single from her album, layers up glassy sounds in all sorts of beautiful ways, with multi-tracked vocal shivers and sighs and hiccups filling out the mix as much as any instruments.”Stereogum

Briana Marela’s debut album for Jagjaguwar, All Around Us, centers on the tangible aspects of the emotional spectrum: the warmth of affection; the weightlessness of joy; the grounded, anchored feeling of love. There is an air of transience in her voice that adds to the ethereal nature of her music, the immediacy of her lyrics, and the feelings on which they focus. Spurred by her emotional ties to the Pacific Northwest and to the people she holds close, Marela balances the concrete with the abstract, and the natural with the artificial.

Produced and recorded by Sigur Rós producer Alex Somers in Reykjavic and featuring strings by Amiina, All Around Us feels mysterious at first, but reveals itself to be a record of remarkable honesty, and of direct, deeply felt emotions. This is evident through the debut single “Surrender,” which has garnered praise from the likes of NPR Music’s “All Songs Considered,” The FADER, and Stereogum, while Consequence of Sound and Vulture included it in their best songs of the week columns, and SPIN named Marela “Artist To Watch” for June.

Now, Marela is excited to share a new video for “Surrender.” Directed by experimental filmmaker, Christin Turner, the video depicts Marela shrouded in kaleidoscopic lights and static. “The video for ‘Surrender’ interprets the torrent of emotions associated with falling in love as blips and signals reaching through the darkness, sparking a supernova of light, motion, and beauty,” says Turner.
