LISTEN // The Besnard Lakes Share Live Video Of “Golden Lion” From Upcoming Release

Screen Shot 2015-10-14 at 3.53.13 PM

The Besnard Lakes will release their most formidable album to date, A Coliseum Complex Museum, out January 22nd, 2016 on Jagjaguwar. Lead single “Golden Lion” will also be released as a limited 12” EP on November 13th, 2015 and include two new, exclusive tracks listed below.

Fifteen years into their career, and nearly two decades into Jagjaguwar’s existence, with a new line up and a renewed sense of ambition, the band have created a concise record that expands upon the luscious vocal harmonies, dense guitar-work and classic 70s melodicism for which they have gained huge critical acclaim. Now comprising writing partnership Jace Lasek (vocals/guitar) and Olga Goreas (vocals/bass) plus long-term drummer Kevin Laing, the cast has expanded to include both Sheenah Ko (keys/vocals) and Robbie Macarthur (guitar). Previous guitarist Richard White maintains a pivotal studio role for the band though no longer tours.

At Pop Montreal last month, The Besnard Lakes performed as a 17-piece band and you can watch video of the performance below. Coupled with the band’s new press shot, which is a restaging of the canonical Fleetwood Mac photos from the mid 80s, The Besnard Lakes are creating a larger narrative about what it means to be a classic rock band with a deep rich catalogue in the 21st Century.

A limited number of deluxe album pre-orders will include limited edition white colored vinyl and a metal sigil, hand-crafted by Olga Goreas. The sigils have become a major element of the LP art. Says Olga: “I made 11 sigils after my dad passed away almost 4 years ago. Each sigil has a particular meaning and there are 11 of them because he died in November of 2011 and numerologically speaking, 11 represents a rebuilding of sorts. In a way, our last album was about endings and this album is about beginning again.

In November, the band will be performing new songs from the album at exclusive shows around Europe – dates are below and tickets are on sale now.

Preceding their January performance at Chicago’s Tomorrow Never Knows Festival, Besnards played a whirling rendition of album standout “And This Is What We Call Progress.” Watch it over at Pitchfork.TV or in the video above.

…or, wherever you live, in the general direction of TORONTO. The final countdown has begun! The ticker at the Polaris Prize website has a little more than 12 days left before the final gala and announcement of the WINNER. As you might already know, the Polaris Prize is given to the artist who had the best album in Canada in late 2009/early 2010, regardless of genre. No offense, other nominees, but that is The Besnard Lakes for The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night.

If you live in Canada (and a lot of the Jag blog readers do), you can watch the Gala where each nominated band performs one song. Then the prize is awarded, and it’s 20,000 bones!

So, my Canuck dawgs, listen to the gala, September 20th at 8pm EST, on Sirius XM 86 or you can watch it on Much Music’s website at 8pm (with tv broadcast on the 25th).
