“[All Around Us] is a collection of stitched together sounds, exploring how far you can go with vocal manipulation. It’s a bit funny, too, because the Seattle native prides herself on being straightforward with her lyrical content. With Sigur Rós producer Alex Somers as her guiding light, Marela recorded her album in Iceland—a place she thanks for inspiration but jokes that people romanticize a bit too much. This attitude is one that’s indicative of Marela as a whole. She’s serious, yet playful. When she speaks in conversation, she’s quiet and reserved, and finds herself talking in circles while somehow being extremely clear with her message. It makes sense her record would be one of full of swirling, chaotic sounds clashing over lyrics that are driven by emotion, yet plainspoken in their delivery.”Noisey

It is the balance of the abstract and intimate that makes Seattle-based Briana Marela and her debut for Jagjaguwar, All Around Us, so special. Named after a children’s picture book, All Around Us traces Briana’s transition between places, beginning just before she embarked on her first-ever tour in 2012. While on that tour, Briana performed at an art gallery in Providence, Rhode Island and it was there that she crossed paths with the artist Scott Alario. He ended up sharing Briana’s music with his best friend Alex Somers, the Sigur Rós and Jónsi-affiliated musician and producer, who would go on to produce All Around Us. Later that year—on the day, incidentally, that the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world—Briana got an email from Alex that would eventually bring them to work together in Iceland.

The magic of this collaboration has been teased via the previously shared song, “Surrender,” which, while musically delicate at first, builds into a bold mantra, and the album’s brightest and most immediate song, the buoyant celebration of friendship “Take Care Of Me.” However, this sonic and spiritual connection cannot be wholly experienced without absorbing the album in its entirety, including the gorgeous, comforting “Dani,” and “All Around Us,” a stark, but inspiring beauty, built on the memory of losing a family member and not being able to say “goodbye.” Throughout, Briana manages to draw inspiration from the loved ones around her, and it turn, evokes a wave of emotions in the listener.

Briana Marela’s All Around Us is out August 21st and available for pre-order now. The album can be streamed in its entirety via Noisey for the next week. Alongside this full album stream, KEXP premiered a beautiful set of in-studio takes recorded earlier this summer, featuring four songs off the new album. These versions underline Briana’s beautiful voice and remarkable production talents.

EP ANNOUNCE // Sharon Van Etten Announces “I Don’t Want To Let You Down” EP Out June 9th

jag266dig1

Sharon Van Etten has never needed much room to make a grand statement. With four albums diligently released during the last six years, she’s become one of music’s most astute new cartographers of the heart, able to capture emotional trials and triumphs with incisive lines and a voice that loses nothing in the translation and transmission of feelings. Her second record, epic, needed only seven tracks to live up to its title. Her subsequent albums, 2012’s Tramp and last year’s Are We There, went longer, but Van Etten managed still to squeeze enormous sentiments into especially small spaces. From start to rising stardom, Van Etten has forever understood the impact of economy.

It should come as no surprise, then, that Van Etten’s forthcoming five-song EP, I Don’t Want to Let You Down, functions as much more than some between-albums, on-tour stopgap. In only 22 minutes, Van Etten offers documents of surrender and disappointment, admission and longing. The songs are as sophisticated and evolved as anything Van Etten has ever done. Produced by Van Etten and Are We There producing partner Stewart Lerman, the EP features a sterling crew of collaborators: Heather Woods Broderick (keyboards, strings, vocals), Doug Keith (guitar), Zeke Hutchins (drums), Brad Cook (bass), Darren Jesse (drums), Peter Broderick (strings), Stuart Bogie (woodwinds), and The War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel (guitar) and Dave Hartley (bass).

Sharon Van Etten I Don’t Want to Let You Down EP is out June 9th on Jagjaguwar and available for pre-order now. An instant free download of the title track, debuted in January on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, comes with each digital pre-order. Surrounding the release of the EP, Sharon will play select festivals and tour South America. Full tour dates after the jump.

ALBUM ANNOUNCE // Black Mountain To Release 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition Of Self-Titled Debut June 23rd, Announce Tour Dates

It’s only a cliché because it’s true, but the greatest records are timeless. Black Mountain’s self-titled debut album is just such a record, its roots leading twisting paths back into the past, while always sounding like ‘now’, like a future still to come. The work of a small collective of musicians operating from Vancouver, Canada, far from any industry buzz but firmly in the eye of their own storm of creativity, Black Mountain’s debut grew from skeletal sessions cut by Stephen McBean and Joshua Wells. Here was a new classic rock, its reference points arcane and clear, its sound fresh, unfamiliar and irresistible. Savor the compact, spacey brilliance of that cosmic, heavy and subtle debut album, remastered and expanded now with a raft of delicious bonus tracks scavenged from the Black Mountain Army archives. Black Mountain (10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) is out June 23rd on Jagjaguwar. Watch the album trailer above or on our YouTube page.

The 10th Anniversary Deluxe Edition is a double-LP including 8 bonus tracks on limited edition colored vinyl, using foil-print on the first pressing of the litho-wrap gatefold packaging. The records themselves are limited-edition color matched grey double vinyl, as well as standard black vinyl and double disc CD, which are also available with limited edition foil-printing. It includes the original classic album paired with the Druganaut 12″ plus 4 previously unreleased tracks.

Preorder the 10th anniv. edition via Jagjaguwar, iTunes, Amazon, or your local record store.
