GAYNGS’ Stef Needs a New Kidney, Here’s How You Can Help!

Stef (P.O.S. of Doomtree, GAYNGS) needs your help! Last month, he announced he would not continue with plans to go on tour because an ongoing condition with his kidneys had worsened and the next step is a kidney transplant. The good news: Stef’s found several strong candidates for a kidney donation! Medical bills add up, though, which is why Doomtree has started an online fundraiser to help him tackle these expenses so he can focus on getting better. Donated funds will go help pay medical bills, prescription costs and to cover living expenses during recovery. Any amount helps. Let’s get Stef back to where he belongs – healthy and making music! DONATE HERE!

GAYNGS Remixes Gardens & Villa’s “Orange Blossom”

Secretly Canadian’s Gardens & Villa got the royal remix treatment by Ryan Olson’s GAYNGS, and the results are tremendous. Olson was recording at Jim Eno’s studio in Austin just as G&V were traispsing through town. The song “Orange Blossom” called to Mr. Gayngs, and after what I can only imagine was a liquor-soaked Austin, Texas bro-down, the remix-level friendship was forged. Altered Zones said that it turns off the lights and fills the room with the irresistible musk of desire! Holy shit, that is scandalous!

Videos Surface of the GAYNGS Showcase at SXSW 2011

Join us on a walk down memory lane as we recall the magical March evening when some Jagjaguwar staffers became honorary GAYNG members in the shadows of the Mohawk stage, while promises of the party-after-the-after-party lured the rest of us to brave uncharted territory of suburban Austin, Texas.

Here are some new videos of GAYNGS headlining their Mohawk showcase at SXSW 2011.

GAYNGS Remix Blonde Redhead’s “Here Sometimes”

Blonde Redhead must know that anything Gayngs touches turns to gold. The veteran rockers reached out to our favorite Minneapolis collective to remix/ throw in a few signature Gayngs gunshot sounds to a track from their 2010 LP Penny Sparkle. Hear the result in the player below, along with Blonde Redhead remixes from other artists including Pantha Du Prince, Salem and more.

While the rest of America was at BBQ’s and pool parties this weekend, the lucky folks at Sasquatch Music Festival were hanging with some of Minneapolis’ finest. S. Carey and Gayngs both played at the festival and NPR was there to document their sets. Stream the concerts below.

A couple weekends ago GAYNGS performed at the Coachella Valley Music And Arts Festival in Indio, California. Remember?

Minneapolis’ premier smooth collective documented their time in the sunshine using modern photographic equipment. They are now able to share selected memories with you, gentle voyeur, through a visual diary hosted by The Quietus. See?

Watch GAYNGS and Kanye West ft. Justin Vernon Perform Live at Coachella

This past weekend at Coachella in Indio, CA, several of our artists kicked so much ass that they trended on twitter. GAYNGS and Bon Iver were two of those bands. Above is a video of GAYNGS performing “The Walker” and below we have Kanye West and Justin Vernon performing “Lost In the World.”

Kanye told Justin over a year ago that his vision for “Lost in the World” was that it was the festival closer. True to his word…

I’ve got another video featuring our friend Justin D. E. Vernon with bonus Ryan Olson from SXSW. These GAYNGS-leaders stopped by the SPIN Shed at SXSW to chat with Peter Gaston about the project, which can really be summed up by Justin here as “lightspeed right past ironic and into the awesome zone.”

GAYNGS Play Surprise Halloween Show @ NYC’s The Box

When we first heard that GAYNGS would be joining Josh Lucas and Morgan Freeman as guests on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, we didn’t think it could get any better.

Until we got an e-mail from Mr. Lucas last week inquiring to book GAYNGS for a show at The Box in New York.

And that they did, just last night. Pictures below!

S. Carey Live Performance And Interview With NPR!

sk_2S. Carey photo by Meghan Bronsan

They say all good things must come to an end, and that’s just what had to happen with the S. Carey and Tallest Man on Earth fall tour this Monday in our nation’s capital.

Luckily, when All Songs Considered captures that final farewell, you can remember it forever. NPR not only recorded the 9:30 Club concert in its entirety, but Bob Boilen also conducted a wonderful interview with Sean and Kristian.

Click here to listen to and download the concert and interview. The intimacy and beautifully constructed intricacy of All We Grow really shines on this recording.

S. Carey had an amazing band on tour with him- Nick Ball, Jeremy Boettcher, Zach Hanson (not that one) and Mike Noyce (when he wasn’t rocking the dino hoodie with GAYNGS).

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to the shows these past four weeks. So long, farewell and see you soon!

PS: All Songs also has a great photo stream on Flickr of the show here.

GAYNGS Does Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Daytrotter Session

Picture 15

GAYNGS is currently sweeping the nation, one slow jam at a time!

First, the group did a Daytrotter session that includes a brilliant cover of Sade’s “By Your Side” as well as RELAYTED favorites “The Gaudy Side of Town,” “No Sweat” and “Crystal Rope.”

Daytrotter founder Sean Moeller subsequently captured the essence of GAYNGS during their sesh:

These 10 men, occasionally 23 people, often somewhere in between, are beholden to nothing but their inner boombox and what seems to be pumping on them are the sounds of Hall & Oates, the Bee Gees, Bread, Eric B & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, The Doobie Brothers and Sade.

Then they turned it up to 11 on last night’s performance of “Gaudy” on Jimmy Fallon. Click here to watch the full episode.

We already gave you a sneak peak of what to expect from a GAYNGS performance with the live video for the “Gaudy Side of Town.” As the band played Relayted from start to finish, “Gaudy” was the opener that put everyone in the right mood.

Hey Y’all, The Kanye Rumors are True: Best Collaboration of All Time!

4886289316_588512e50d

TGIF, everyone!  I had Stefania take this picture of me laid out on a pile of ice in the Jagjaguwar parking lot this afternoon.  Feels good, man.

The internet heard a rumor yesterday about Kanye West and Bon Iver working together and RAN WITH IT. I read some true things and some false things, but overall everyone got the gist.  There is a new track on Kanye’s upcoming October (currently untitled) record that features a sample from the Bon Iver song “Woods” and vocals from Justin Vernon called “Lost in the World.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Kanye said the following about Justin:

“He’s similar to me, like where he just does shit just so people would be like, ‘Oh shit how did you do that? How did that happen?’ He’s just a really cool guy to be around.”

We concur!

Justin Vernon did his first lengthy interview in over a year with Ryan Dombal at Pitchfork. In the article, which just went up, he elaborates on the project with Kanye, hanging out in Hawaii and his relationship/work with GAYNGS.

GAYNGS tour dates will feature Justin Vernon at every show.  Tickets are on sale now!

GAYNGS takes you to “The Gaudy Side of Town” on prom night: the video

3hhs_newgayngs_11

Remember when all we knew about GAYNGS came from a couple mysterious 30 second clips via VIMEO? Times have changed and their world is slowly but steadily unraveling. And our world is all the better thanks to it.

Today, the yearning abated even further. Pitchfork premiered the live video of “The Gaudy Side of Town” from the May 14th Last Prom on Earth gig at Minneapolis’ First Avenue. Remember when we thought that would be the only show they would ever play??

Kristen Stewart Throws The GAYNGS Sign

We see what you’re doing there, Kristen Stewart!

Yesterday at JFK KStew, outspoken Bon Iver fan, threw up the GAYNGS sign to the paparazzi. She forgot to put her thumbs up, but whatever, this is clearly her way of showing us that she’s down with the Prince-approved and smoothest band in all of Minneapolis.

I’ve probably posted this before, but if you want to throw up the GAYNGS sign yourself (or do it correctly), here’s a handy video.

Mike Noyce of GAYNGS by Leslie Plesser

GAYNGS is going on the road!

They had a most triumphant cd release show, The Last Prom on Earth, last Friday in which everyone had the best formal of their lives, PRINCE showed up, and the entire GAYNGS crew played Relayted from start to finish.  The Fader posted an excellent review of The Prom on their site that is making me kick myself for not hopping in my Taurus and hightailing it for Minneapolis.

New GAYNGS Video for “Cry” Featuring Kevin Godley

On the new GAYNGS record, Relayted, the band covers Godley & Creme’s “Cry.” The video also draws its inspiration from the source – animating the faces of its contributors to morph into one other. Many references are made to the original groundbreaking video, including an appearance by Kevin Godley himself.

4/20 – The High Holy GAYNGS Day

The CD and LP are really impressive – I took a picture of the LP here (same as the cd only…LP sized).  The angle is a little weird because I didn’t want the internet to see my reflection in the GOLD FOIL, but trust me, shit is gold.  The second is the magical watercolor gatefold – it’s like a Where’s Waldo of your favorite GAYNGS members!

The entire GAYNGS crew, rumored to be closing in at 24 people including Solid Gold, POS, Ryan Olson, Justin Vernon, Mike Noyce and Megafaun, will be performing at a unique event at 1st Avenue in Minneapolis on Friday, May 14th: The Last Prom on Earth.

There will be two record release performances – one at 5pm that is all ages and a boozier, 21+ version at 10pm. Passes are available at ticketmaster here and here.

What constitutes a GAYNGS initiation?

The Last Prom on Earth is not only the title of the last cut on the album, but it is also a musical celebration of Olson’s project. As GAYNG Leader, he’ll be arranging a night of music from Relayted with all players involved with the record. The performance will litterally be the last prom we’ll ever go to, and it’ll be at 1st Avenue in Minneapolis on 5/14. An early, all-ages show will commence at 5pm, and a rowdy (and a scootch more gaudy) version will be at 10pm. The tuxedo joints in The Cities will be hit hard.

GAYNGS Relayted will be released in stores on 5/11 (5/17 in the UK).

Jagjaguwar Introduces GAYNGS, New Album Relayted Coming in May

When Ryan Olson decided to make a record with Solid Gold members Zack Coulter and Adam Hurlburt, it was clear to them what the result would be: a collection of drugged-up keyboards and slick bedroom production almost exclusively inspired by 10cc’s “I’m Not In Love.” To be fair, they weren’t entirely off.  What they didn’t know was that it would spiral into a project of epic proportions, enlisting the talents of over 25 musicians from various scenes around the country, relocating the base of operations from Olson’s Minneapolis bedroom/studio to the Wisconsin-based studio April Base, and the genesis of a musical super-family, GAYNGS.
