The Soft Province (Jace Lasek of Besnard Lakes) Debut LP Out Now

Picture 1

Besnard Lakes frontman Jace Lasek met Michael Gardiner when they were just kids playing baseball in Saskatchewan. They began jamming together as teenagers, and Michael contributed to The Besnard Lakes as a multi-instrumentalist since the band’s very beginning.

During a heat wave in August 2010, Lasek and Gardiner recorded the self-titled Soft Province debut LP, at Lasek’s own Breakglass Studios in Montreal. The two old friends grew up together, and grew into the same influences. And the outcome demonstrates how in-tune they are with one another. Guests on the album include Olga Goreas of Besnard on drums and bass, and additional drumming from Max Henry of Suuns and Young Galaxy.

The album expands Lasek’s signature sound of  masterful, whirling layering and his unmistakable voice, proving  just as multi-faceted as the instrumentation he achieves.

You can download “One Was a Lie” via Three Ring Records here.

This is a must-have for any Besnard Lakes diehard!

The Besnard Lakes have had an outstanding run since the March 2010 release of The Besnard Lakes Are The Roaring Night. It’s almost been a year and they continue to bring new meaning to the brilliance of a fog machine and real stage presence.

Preceding their January performance at Chicago’s Tomorrow Never Knows Festival, Besnards played a whirling rendition of album standout “And This Is What We Call Progress.” Watch it over at Pitchfork.TV or in the video above.

R. Alverson Directs New Bonnie “Prince” Billy Video, New Jerusalem at SXSW

newjerusalemposter

We are happy to announce following New Jerusalem‘s triumphant world premiere at Rotterdam Film Festival, R. Alverson’s second feature film starring Colm O’Leary and Will Oldham will make its North American debut at SXSW.

Alverson and co-star Will Oldham have just recently collaborated again for the video of Bonnie “Prince” Billy & The Cairo Gang’s “New Wonder.” This song comes from the forthcoming 10″ Island Brothers aimed to benefit Edge Outreach’s efforts in Haiti.

“New Wonder” video directed by R. Alverson

The stunning video was seemingly filmed at a child’s wake, and like Alverson’s films, it is a slow-building and intimate look at an individual’s internal struggles and their devastating tangibility.

Filmmaker Magazine called New Jerusalem “a rare American indie film that dares to contend with spirituality and The Struggle For Meaning.”

If you plan on attending SXSW, check for the New Jerusalem screening dates below.

When Sean Carey last played California while on tour with The Tallest Man on Earth, they performed a magnificently cozy session with Yours Truly. Check it.

Watch S. Carey’s “In the Dirt” Video, Tour Dates W/ Yann Tiersen

In the Dirt by S. Carey from Secretly Jag on Vimeo.

With no signs of winter coming to an end, we often forget the simple joy that snow once brought us as children. The S. Carey team received a video from two brothers. Axel Byrfors and Nils Byrfors, who made a video for “In the Dirt,” recruiting their own children on a journey lasting until sunrise in Malmo, Sweden.

Sean Carey tells Spin, who premiered the video on Friday:

The song is an anthem about staying together with a person for your whole life…Me and my wife want to have kids at some point. And to see these kids interacting the way they were, and just to see how beautiful children can be, combined with my desire to have kids — I just loved it.

S. Carey and his touring band continue to travel the country, soon opening for French virtuoso Yann Tiersen, who is perhaps best known stateside for his contributions on the Amelie and Goodbye Lenin! soundtracks.

Gather ’round for the S. Carey Yours Truly Session

Picture 10

This cozy, convivial S. Carey performance Yours Truly captured marks a foretelling of the December tour. Good times & great music. What more could you ask for?

In My Room: S Carey “In the Dirt” from Yours Truly on Vimeo.

As the YT post narrates the inviting scene….

Though there was no hot chocolate simmering on the stove and no fireside chatter floating about, the room felt just as cozy as an Eau Claire cabin in the winter, as S. Carey played a special show for us all. As the evening progressed, wine started to flow a bit more, the room became livelier, and the band started to pick up the pace. It ended up being quite the party, capped off with album highlight, “In The Dirt.”

Shots from the video and December tour dates, post-jump! Also thought I should mention your last chance to take advantage of Amazon’s November digital deal: mp3 format of All We Grow is available for $5!

S. Carey Daytrotter Session

20054381-3738335

S. Carey’s Daytrotter Session has just been posted here! Sean, Nick, Zach and Jeremy stopped by the new Austin DT back in September during the Tallest Man on Earth tour. We heard the sound engineer cut his hand when opening up the studio- yikes!! Thanks for taking one home for the team, Matt.

Carey sings on the album’s opening track, “If I could run my fingers through your hair/If you could run along the shore and air/I would keep all my mornings clear/Move all your bees to here,” and hell man, that’s some dangerous shit to be wanting.

Right inside those words, we feel the scale tipping a little and we feel that while some of sweet-sounding and dewy, but sunburned moments have known some sadness, there’s no way they’ve seen it all yet.

S. Carey will be on tour this Winter warming your hearts one stop at a time!

S. Carey Live Performance And Interview With NPR!

sk_2S. Carey photo by Meghan Bronsan

They say all good things must come to an end, and that’s just what had to happen with the S. Carey and Tallest Man on Earth fall tour this Monday in our nation’s capital.

Luckily, when All Songs Considered captures that final farewell, you can remember it forever. NPR not only recorded the 9:30 Club concert in its entirety, but Bob Boilen also conducted a wonderful interview with Sean and Kristian.

Click here to listen to and download the concert and interview. The intimacy and beautifully constructed intricacy of All We Grow really shines on this recording.

S. Carey had an amazing band on tour with him- Nick Ball, Jeremy Boettcher, Zach Hanson (not that one) and Mike Noyce (when he wasn’t rocking the dino hoodie with GAYNGS).

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to the shows these past four weeks. So long, farewell and see you soon!

PS: All Songs also has a great photo stream on Flickr of the show here.

GAYNGS Does Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, Daytrotter Session

Picture 15

GAYNGS is currently sweeping the nation, one slow jam at a time!

First, the group did a Daytrotter session that includes a brilliant cover of Sade’s “By Your Side” as well as RELAYTED favorites “The Gaudy Side of Town,” “No Sweat” and “Crystal Rope.”

Daytrotter founder Sean Moeller subsequently captured the essence of GAYNGS during their sesh:

These 10 men, occasionally 23 people, often somewhere in between, are beholden to nothing but their inner boombox and what seems to be pumping on them are the sounds of Hall & Oates, the Bee Gees, Bread, Eric B & Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest, The Doobie Brothers and Sade.

Catch a Glimpse of S. Carey’s Record Release Show Before the Band Embarks on Tour With The Tallest Man on Earth

Sean Carey’s record release show at Minneapolis’ Southern Theater marked his inaugural performance as S. Carey, but you wouldn’t have guessed it. Accompanied by Jeremy Boettcher, Ben Lester, Nick Ball and special guest Mike Noyce, Sean played All We Grow in its entirety and didn’t miss a beat.

“Mothers” & “Action” (live) S. Carey from Sean Carey on Vimeo.

As the Twin Cities Daily Planet live review put it, “The band played the album from start to finish, with tight, sometimes indiscernible transitions between songs as members occasionally switched out instruments. It reminded me of Spoon’s set at First Avenue earlier this year: each moment was planned ahead of time, every note was played with confidence, and all performers on stage were professionals through-and-through.”

But this is only the beginning!  The Tallest Man on Earth tour with S. Carey as the opener begins tomorrow in Vancouver. Check out all the tour dates, after the jump. More

Stream S. Carey’s “All We Grow” on NPR!

jag181full

All Songs Considered has S.Carey’s All We Grow available for a full album stream here. Here’s what Robin Hilton suggests for you, the listener:

“All We Grow is a meditative record, one you’ll want to hear on headphones on a quiet night. Carey has a gift for crafting expansive, cinematic pieces that unfold and bloom slowly and delicately, so be sure to take some time with it.”

This record is a perfect end-of-the-summer listen that culminates everything that is beautiful and genuine about being in love. Take Robin’s advice, you really don’t want to miss out on this one.

All We Grow will be out August 24th in the US and the 30th in the UK.  You can pre-order the album here and receive an instant album download and 11×17 full-color poster.  You can also still grab MP3s for “In The Stream” and “In The Dirt.”

S. Carey featured on All Songs Considered

Today’s All Songs Considered featured “In The Dirt” by S.Carey!  Host Robin Hilton calls All We Grow a “gorgeous solo record,” attributing both Sean’s voice and songwriting. We heart NPR!

The album will be out August 24th on Jagjaguwar.

Check out the podcast here.

It’s a “back to life,  back to reality” kind of week for most of us at the Jag office. We wish everyone else who attended Pitchfork Music Fest a quick recovery.

7838810109160_main

VHF Records is set to release a retrospective of the 20-year partnership between Richard Youngs and Simon Wickham-Smith, appropriately titled 20 years. It will include their first new vinyl in nearly 15 years, as well as three CDs worth of previously unreleased projects taken from the time vault that is “The 90s.”

Check out all you need to know here.

We here at Jag have released a bountiful cornucopia of Richard Youngs jams, including the re-release of a 1997 collaboration with Wickham-Smith back in ’08 called VEIL(For Greg).

All of this should keep you busy for a while!

GAYNGS takes you to “The Gaudy Side of Town” on prom night: the video

3hhs_newgayngs_11

Remember when all we knew about GAYNGS came from a couple mysterious 30 second clips via VIMEO? Times have changed and their world is slowly but steadily unraveling. And our world is all the better thanks to it.

Today, the yearning abated even further. Pitchfork premiered the live video of “The Gaudy Side of Town” from the May 14th Last Prom on Earth gig at Minneapolis’ First Avenue. Remember when we thought that would be the only show they would ever play??

This ish is epic. I personally can’t get enough of it.

GAYNGS fall tour dates, after the jump.
