Oneida Returns With “A List of the Burning Mountains” LP in November – Listen to a Preview

Oneida has a new LP coming out on November 13th! Stream a preview of A List of the Burning Mountains above.

A List of the Burning Mountains is the latest studio album by Brooklyn psych/noise/kraut godfathers Oneida. It was recorded at the Ocropolis, the band’s longtime studio, and it is a powerful, sweeping gesture that evokes the storied history of that space and Oneida’s dedication to a diehard independent music and art community in fashion-driven Brooklyn. This is true underground sound from a band that has released twelve albums in fifteen years and has been hailed by the New York Times, NPR, Time Out NY and the Village Voice as an original, essential voice in the history of New York’s towering experimental music lineage.

Brutal and gorgeous, churning and soothing, Burning Mountains is less a traditional album than a tiny sip from an endlessly roiling sea. Oneida is known for long-form improvisatory performances and collaborations; this release, with its drunken-master drumming, howling guitar and scouring drones, serves as a concentrated blast from a wholly unique band known for 12-hour live, improvised performances and multi-day recording sessions.

A List of the Burning Mountains will be released on digital and vinyl formats on November 13th, 2012. Oneida will perform at this year’s Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina on September 8th.

Watch A Beautiful Lia Ices Live Version of “Daphne”

Lia Ices performed with her band in the UK at the Green Man Festival back in August, and they recorded a “Green Man Session” of her song “Daphne” that will really blow your socks off. The accompaniment is scaled back, letting Lia’s voice become the main instrument on stage. Lia Ices’s album Grown Unknown was named by Boston Globe‘s James Reed as his 9th favorite record of the year.

Bon Iver, Bon Iver Tops the 2011 Lists

Perhaps the Sioux City Weekender said it best? “When we all die and go to heaven, Bon Iver will be playing over the loud speakers directly from God’s iPod. Justin Vernon’s sophomore disc could not be improved upon.”

Below are list of websites who made good choices in 2011 – they put Bon Iver, Bon Iver (the four-time Grammy-nominated artist) at the top of their critical lists.

“Bon Iver is masterfully assembled– an ambitious, occasionally devastating exercise in arranged sound.”
Pitchfork #1

“Justin Vernon followed up one of the most heartbreaking albums of the young millennium,
For Emma, Forever Ago, with something entirely different and original.”
Paste #1

“[An] outstanding follow-up”
Exclaim #1

NPR Listener Poll #1

“A slow-and-steady road trip through the heartland, punctuated by bold saxophone,
woozy synths and stunning string crescendos. Vernon’s falsetto is undoubtedly
his greatest gift, but the tale weaved by the non-lyrical parts of “Bon Iver” alone
make it one of the year’s best.”
Billboard #2

Urban Outfitters #2

Bon Iver, Bon Iver is, in many ways, the polar opposite of For Emma.
Where that record found expression in stripped-down, haunting arrangements,
Bon Iver traffics in lush, abundant orchestration, a smorgasbord of instruments
not vying for attention so much as adding individual brushstrokes to a breathtakingly
vivid canvas. Calling it “expansive” feels cheap; this is a record with no horizons in sight.”
PopMatters #2,  Artist of the Year #2

“He didn’t rest on his laurels and create For Emma: Vol. 2.
If anything, he created Bon Iver Mach 2, now with saxophones”
Consequence of Sound #2

“Complementing the isolated Americana landscape of For Emma, Forever Ago
with a warm and orchestral bloom is a colossal achievement.”
Under the Radar #3

“A sweeping work condensed into a tight, 10-song suite, Bon Iver flows from one picturesque
scene to the next, at a purposeful but never hurried pace. With all its downy synthesizers,
red-light saxophones, and ornate string and woodwind accompaniments, the album could
have turned out busy and overworked, yet its arrangements swell and retract so organically
that it never feels cluttered—even at its grandest, the record retains the intimacy of
Bon Iver’s comparatively sparse debut.”
Onion AV Club #3

New Bon Iver Interview with CBC’s Q

Jian Ghomeshi, the Terry Gross of Canada, did a super stellar interview with Justin Vernon yesterday morning at CBC’s Q. They spoke about the the various controversies of the past week, the Grammys, Kanye West, and Kathleen Edward’s new album. Justin also performs vocals with The National during their Q performance after the jump!  More

Sharon Van Etten Records With the NY Times Popcast, Preview New Song “Leonard”

Sharon Van Etten spoke this week with Larry Rohter of the New York Times Music Popcast. They had a great talk about recording Tramp with Aaron Dessner, the progression of its instrumentation, and the emotional places informing the new record.

Sharon also performs acoustic versions of “Leonard”  and “Serpents” from the upcoming album. If you are even a baby fan, you need to download the bejesus out of this. It’s so, so lovely.

I also like the Australian artist Gotye who is interviewed right before Sharon. He sounds like Peter Gabriel, and 20 million people have watched his awesome video.

You can download the Popcast on iTunes here or via the NY Times Arts section.

Bon Iver is Paste Magazine’s #1 of 2011

This week’s issue of Paste Magazine features a cover story on Bon Iver and reveals that Bon Iver, Bon Iver is their #1 album of the 2011. The interview is a long and interesting read! Click here to check it out.

Sneak Peek of Bon Iver’s Deluxe Edition

The deluxe version of Bon Iver, Bon Iver will be available at iTunes tomorrow. Time Magazine’s Steve Snyder did a review of the video accompaniments and premiered the video for “Hinnom, TX.”

“I found the video riveting, deceptively modest and yet intricately structured and manipulated. And on the iPad, the crisp resolution and popping colors drew me in. Cranking up the volume, I was transported from my morning subway commute to a twilight drive towards the Western mountains. I had listened to this song dozens of times before, and yet this accompaniment made it far more active and engrossing.”

Bon Iver, Bon Iver Deluxe Edition is Nearly Here!

On November 29th Jagjaguwar will release the deluxe edition of Bon Iver, Bon Iver. The deluxe edition is comprised short films for each song - individual visual works that both complement and enrich the audio on the album. The trailer above splices some of the videos together – you can get a feel of what they’re like.

The videos were shot by Dan Huiting, Isaac Gale, David Jensen, JoLynn Garnes, Ryan Thompson, Andre Durand and Justin Vernon.

Let’s talk about how you can get this deluxe version! It is mainly a digital-only release via iTunes. If you already purchased the record (hey, thanks for doing that), you can buy the videos by themselves here, and if you haven’t yet purchased the record, you can buy the deluxe version here.

A limited amount of DVDS containing the videos will be available at your local record store – make sure and ask for it. Starting in December, we’ll be putting the DVDS in orders of Bon Iver, Bon Iver through our mail order.

Bon Iver Wins ALBUM OF THE YEAR at Q Awards

I’m so proud that my eyes are all watery, my face has turned red and my heart feels like it’s going to burst. JUSTICE HAS BEEN DONE. Bon Iver has taken a seat in the hall of Q Champions, winning the BEST ALBUM OF 2011 for Bon Iver, Bon Iver. The award ceremony was tonight in London, and Bon Iver took awards beside U2, Adele, and Coldplay. Our hats are off to these fine gentlemen for being THE BEST. We love you.

Lia Ices Pairs with IFC for a “Love Is Won” Video Contest

We are very happy to announce that Lia Ices/Jagjaguwar are pairing with IFC to announce a video contest surrounding her song “Love Is Won.” Lia’s video was shot by herself on Super 8 film while on vacation in Rome with her partner. Bon Iver performs “Towers” on Jools Holland

Bon Iver is currently in the midst of a UK/European tour, and Justin Vernon just made his second appearance on Later With Jools Holland, this time with his giant, talented band performing “Towers” on television for the first time. Enjoy!

Download Oneida’s Ocropolis III Performance at NPR

If you have ever accused NPR of not being hip, hold on to your fucking hat – NPR Music recorded the entire 7-hour Oneida improvisational performance in the spirit of their former studio, The Ocropolis. They brought in guests to collaborate with them from Portishead, Boredoms, Yo La Tengo, Chavez and more. They have divided the performance up into 3 parts which can be streamed or downloaded at NPR Music.

Bon Iver, Bushmills, and POLICA

Bon Iver is participating in the Bushmills “Since Way Back” promotion, which “celebrates the lives and brotherly relationships of artists and influencers across the world, and collaborates with each to produce creative, inspired content that reflects each of his passions.” There are painted billboards and printed ads featuring Justin Vernon, manager Nate Vernon, manager Kyle Frenette and Audio Engineer Brian Joseph. Justin and Nate’s father said in a statement via facebook status, “I’ve raised my boys to enjoy the finer things in life: whiskey among friends.” Our favorite part?  Justin is wearing a Jagjaguwar shirt in the photos. He interviewed at GQ, saying “we’re enjoying the shit out of it.”

Dan Huiting of MPLS.tv filmed the Bushmills after party of Bon Iver’s last show in Boston. The campaign gets a much-needed shot of estrogen with use of incredible new music by POLICA – the new musical project by Channy from GAYNGS. At the POLICA site you can hear “Dark Star” as well as “Lay Your Cards Out” featuring Bon Iver’s Mike Noyce.

LIA ICES Performs at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Download Tenderflex Remix of “New Myth”

Lia Ices “New Myth (Remix by Tenderflex) by DOJAGSC

This morning was the presentation of the Spring 2011 Electric Feathers collection at The Box at Lincoln Center. The runway show included a live musical element - Lia Ices performed vocals for two remixes of songs from her latest album, Grown Unknown, as well as modeled from the collection.

Lia Ices in Electric Feathers (courtesy of Vogue.com by Elizabeth Lippman)

The remixes for the songs “New Myth” and “Grown Unknown” were produced by Tenderflex, the new project of DJ Logic (Mos Def, Medeski Martin and Wood) and producer David Maurice (Jay Z, Kerli).

GAYNGS Remixes Gardens & Villa’s “Orange Blossom”

Secretly Canadian’s Gardens & Villa got the royal remix treatment by Ryan Olson’s GAYNGS, and the results are tremendous. Olson was recording at Jim Eno’s studio in Austin just as G&V were traispsing through town. The song “Orange Blossom” called to Mr. Gayngs, and after what I can only imagine was a liquor-soaked Austin, Texas bro-down, the remix-level friendship was forged. Altered Zones said that it turns off the lights and fills the room with the irresistible musk of desire! Holy shit, that is scandalous!

Bon Iver Session on World Cafe Today!

courtesy of NPR

Oh for goodness’ sake, this is incredible.

Bon Iver recorded a session at the Rare Book Room Studio in Brooklyn for XPN’s World Cafe with David Dye. The whole band records acoustic versions of “Holocene” and “Beach Baby” and Justin does a solo piano version of “Beth/Rest” that will just fucking knock your socks off (or your mandals or your uggs or whatever).

You can check your local listings for broadcast times, but the show will be archived at the World Cafe page.

Pry it open with your love <3

Watch Unofficial Bon Iver “Holocene” Video

One of the great aspects of working with Bon Iver is exchanging with Justin Vernon’s fans; their passion and creativity is consistently inspiring. Bon Iver’s music has influenced visual art, song covers, short films and music videos.

Last week we were sent a short fan video by Brisbane, Australia’s Dylan Wiehahn for “Holocene” on the eve of the release of our official music video for the same song by Nabil Elderkin. We were immediately struck by the similarities. Dylan was inspired by New Zealand, and he filmed his younger brother walking around the forests and lakes of Queenstown. For two directors half a world apart, “Holocene” evoked visions of time-lapsed clouds moving over mountains, youth, and brilliant scenes of the natural landscape. It’s a pure coincidence that you can check out for yourself:

Smith, and buy one for yourself and one for me (please?)! There are only 500 available, so hop to it.

New Video for Bon Iver’s “Holocene” Premieres at National Geographic

Bon Iver’s “Holocene” references our current geological period, and Bon Iver, Bon Iver, as an album, references the cycles of birth, living and death. The landscape of Iceland, with its mountains, glaciers, and waterfalls, recalls the past where volcanoes once shaped the earth and where ice caps currently melt. It looks like the most marvelous place on Earth.

Director Nabil Elderkin went to Iceland in search of these dramatic landscapes to film a music video for “Holocene,” and the resulting video appropriately premiered this morning on the website of National Geographic.

Watch New Lia Ices Video for “Love Is Won”

Shot on Super 8 Film in Rome, the video for “Love Is Won” by Lia Ices is a gorgeous document that will have you nostalgic for traveling with someone you love. The video was directed by Christin Turner in collaboration with Lia Ices.

Lia Ices will play at the Mercury Lounge in NYC tonight, in the UK this month and on the west coast in December with The Sea and Cake. Dates are on the tour page.

Lia Ices On So You Think You Can Dance

The music of Lia Ices has been used for several contemporary dances, and the acclaimed dance competition So You Think You Can Dance used Lia’s song “Grown Unknown” for the opening number of their second-to-final show of this year’s season.

The Wall Street Journal wrote:

“Grown Unknown” by Lia Ices is the song for the opening group dance. There’s a lot of clapping for rhythm, a big red rose in the middle and all the dancers are in white. It’s very pretty. And cool music. The rose ascends to heaven at the end and confetti falls to the stage. This might be the first time all season I run to iTunes to buy a song I heard on this show.”

Dinosaur Jr.’s First Three Albums Back on Vinyl This October

Dinosaur Jr. at the Anti-Club, Hollywood, CA, 1987 by Joseph Henderson

By now you know the story: J Mascis, Lou Barlow, & Patrick “Murph” Murphy, meet in Amherst, MA. J, Lou & Murph start a band. Said band goes on to rip through the musical landscape and prove to be the genesis of the “alternative rock” archetype.

Over the last 25+ years, Dinosaur Jr. have influenced a countless number of bands, both peers and protégés, by wailing their classic union of melodic bass, seething drums, virtuosic guitar shredding and listless vocal delivery through the iconic Marshall stacks.

Jagjaguwar is honored to reissue the band’s first three albums on vinyl, Dinosaur, You’re Living All Over Me and Bug, on October 4th, 2011. Originally released on the venerable Homestead and SST labels in the 1980’s, the reissues stay true to form and include the cardinal track lists.

Dinosaur Jr. recently completed a sold-out tour playing Bug in its entirety, and the acclaimed 33 1/3 book series by Continuum released Nick Attfield’s book about You’re Living All Over Me this summer.

Welcome Sharon Van Etten!

Sharon Van Etten by Dusdin Condren

We are so enormously excited and proud to welcome Sharon Van Etten to the Jagjaguwar roster.

With a voice known for its stark power and subtle refinement, Sharon Van Etten has a mastery for writing songs with direct honesty and feeling. Over the course of releasing two full-length albums celebrated by fans and critics, alike – Because I Was In Love (Language of Stone; 2009) and epic (Ba Da Bing; 2010), Sharon has affected a multitude of hearts and minds over the past couple of years.  Jagjaguwar will be releasing Sharon’s third full-length in early 2012.

Earlier this year Sharon collaborated with Justin Vernon and Megafaun for Sounds of the South and performed with them as a part of the National’s Music NOW festival in Cincinnati. Watch one of their performances below.

For Sharon Van Etten’s upcoming tour dates at Bumbershoot, Musicfest NW and more, visit the Jagjaguwar tour page.

Cribs: Bon Iver Edition

Actually, just kidding. Not so much Cribs as in cool-old-vet-clinic-that-is-now-a-sweet-recording-studio. To complement the incredible SPIN cover story, David Bevan did a rad video interview (directed by Dan Huiting). April Base, everybody! It’s like being in HEAVEN.

Bon Iver Calgary 12″ Out Now

The vinyl 12″ for Bon Iver’s “Calgary” b/w “I Can’t Make You Love Me / Nick of Time” is now available at independent retailers. A digital 12″ containing music videos for both is available at iTunes here. The video for the latter song captures the recording at April Base, and you can also watch it at YouTube below.

Gregory Euclide, the artist who made the beautiful three-dimensional paintings used for Bon Iver, Bon Iver and the Calgary 12″, was interviewed by Pitchfork for a “Take Cover” feature that ran today. You can see a video of the artwork being made and read more about Gregory’s process. You can check out close-ups of the piece here at his flickr page.

Moonface’s Organ Music Pre-Order Download New Song, See Them on Tour

Moonface, the primary recording project of Spencer Krug (formerly of Sunset Rubdown, Frog Eyes and Wolf Parade), will release its first full-length album on August 2nd, Organ Music not Vibraphone like I’d Hoped.

Today Jagjaguwar is offering Organ Music for pre-order at SC Distribution. All pre-orders come with an instant digital download of the whole album. Click here to access Moonface at SC Distribution.

Last month we offered a download of the song “Fast Peter” from Organ Music, and today we’d also like to share a download for a Moonface song that did not seem to fit within the group. Over at the interactive Moonface fan site, http://moonface.ca/, the song “The Way You Wish You Could Live in the Storm” is available for download. Spencer describes it thus:

It’s a song that was cut from the record – an angry duck that didn’t get along with the other songs on the Organ Music LP. That is not to say it’s a bad song (though not to say it’s a good song, either), it’s just something I made that I don’t know what to do with. It’s more techno, or something, than the rest of the Organ Music LP. Less silky. But still, I thought it was worth sharing, for anyone who cares. It’s more than a pile of wet leaves. Maybe it’s something you can listen to while you do the dishes, or draw, or teach your baby to dance. So if you’re inclined, click on the link provided here and do with it what you will.

Go see Moonface on tour this summer! Dates are here.

The Besnard Lakes’ New EP + North American Tour with Malajube This Fall

Welcome to Pine Point is a multimedia documentary that combines video footage, artwork, photographs and music on a web interface. Pine Point was a Canadian mining town that existed for one generation then closed and was wiped off the map. The documentary serves as an album to the town’s memory.

Co-Director Michael Simons, a longtime friend of The Besnard Lakes’ Jace Lasek, told the band about the project and asked if the band would be interested in providing some music for it. He asked if the band would cover “We’re Here for a Good Time (Not a Long Time)” by Canadian rock band Trooper.

The songs The Besnard Lakes contributed to Welcome to Pine Point will be available via 12″ EP available at their upcoming tour dates and by mail order at SC Distribution. “The Corner” is one of two songs written for the end credits of the film “Memories Corner”. This is the song that wasn’t chosen. Also a Besnard Lakes rarity, this song is available for the first and only time on You Lived in the City.

Click here to visit Welcome to Pine Point and hear new music from The Besnard Lakes

You Lived In the City will be released on September 20, 2011. Tour dates here.

Bon Iver Brings “Holocene” to Fallon

GOOD LORD! This is just about the best tv performance ever, right? This is the first public performance of the great Bon Iver song “Holocene” – both a venue in Portland where Justin Vernon once had a rough night and also our current geological epoch.

Justin talks about Holocene in his NPR Morning Edition interview (titled “Bon Iver gets Bigger and More Complex”) that ran yesterday here.

Bon Iver, Bon Iver is now in stores.

Bon Iver on Colbert, New Tour Dates

Happy release day, Jag fans! Today Bon Iver, Bon Iver is available in retail and online stores worldwide. We have also posted a second round of late 2011 US tour dates in the western part of the country here.

Last night Bon Iver rocked The Colbert Report like a ThirstIcane (whatever that is)! A delightful interview in which Stephen revealed that his wife does hot yoga to “Skinny Love” is below. We were hoping for cabin jokes, and we got them!

The band performed “Calgary” for the show and an online exclusive performance of “Skinny Love” that is easily my new favorite. Great job, gentlemen! We love and appreciate you.

Pink Mountaintops are METAL PROBLEM Watch “Through All the Worry”

Steve McBean and his band, Pink Mountaintops, were cast and appear as the band Metal Problem in the new film by Vancouver director Rob Leickner, Everything Louder Than Everything Else. The movie follows a woman who owns a recording studio, and Metal Theory records the song “Through All The Worry,” a new song by Pink Mountaintops. Steve McBean also performs in the movie (with lines and everything!). I totally buy that he’s in a rock band.

Everything Louder Than Everything Else is screening at the Plaza Theatre in Calgary on 6/20 at 9pm.

Pink Mountaintops will perform at Fuck Yeah Fest on September 3rd!

Bon Iver Releases Video for “Calgary” Win a Spot on the Fallon Band Bench

Today Bon Iver released a music video for the first single, “Calgary.” It was written by Justin Vernon and filmed at April Base Studios in Fall Creek, WI, directed by Andre Durand and Dan Huiting and produced by Daniel Cummings and Picture Machine Productions. I stopped watching America’s Next Top Model a few years ago, but the woman in the video (Raina Hein) was one of the two finalists in Cycle 14. There is a picture of her spooning the magnificent dog who lives at April Base, Gordon, on her website. Gordon should have a blog. Moving on…

Bon Iver is playing two television shows with the full 9-piece band next week. Monday, June 20th, is a performance on The Colbert Report and Tuesday the 21st (release day!!!) is Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

The Fallon show is offering Bon Iver fans a chance to be close to the performance. If you click on the link below you will be directed to enter the “Band Bench” contest where you win seats on the band benches that surround the stage during the performance. Click here and enter the band code “BIV” in your entry.

One last thing: yesterday I mentioned that Bon Iver was on the cover of the July issue of SPIN. Today that article is now available to read online. Go! Read it!

Bon Iver Lands Cover of SPIN

Justin Vernon is on the cover of SPIN‘s July issue! The article is one of the best things ever written about Bon Iver, so go to a place that sells magazines and buy that shit (also available on iPad with an exclusive interview video). The new album, Bon Iver, Bon Iver, is coming out in ONE WEEK. Our beautiful pre-order is still up and ready for you.

Lia Ices’ “Ice Wine” Video by Yours Truly

Today we premiered the Yours Truly live recording of Lia Ices’ “Ice Wine” on Pitchfork TV. In the Nate Chan-directed clip, filmed at Different Fur Studios in San Francisco, Ices and her band were in the midst of a tremendous tour with The Cave Singers on their way to SXSW in March of 2011.

Lia Ices will play a handful of select dates later this summer, including a set at Lollapalooza.

Bon Iver got the royal treatment – a feature in the New York Times Sunday Magazine. Written by Jon Caramanica, the article is both a great primer for the uninitiated and an in-depth article for people who want to know more about what’s going on with Justin and Bon Iver, Bon Iver. Click here to read the article and here to pre-order the new record.

Bon Iver – Late Night with Jimmy Fallon

The touring band for Bon Iver will be 9 members strong and include some of the best humans walking the earth. They are still putting the finishing touches on the live versions of the new Bon Iver, Bon Iver material, so Late Night With Jimmy Fallon offered to have Justin come on and perform the b-side to the “Calgary” 12″ – Bonnie Raitt’s “I Can’t Make You Love Me” with a dash of “Nick of Time.” Justin had a sweet couch interview with Jimmy and performed a little medley with Phil Cook on piano.

The interview video doesn’t show this, but it’s pretty awesome – as Justin walked out for his interview, and the Roots played the theme song from Northern Exposure. For all the Bon Iver n00bs – the name originates from an episode of Northern Exposure (one of Justin’s favorite shows). You can see the current cover of Billboard and the future cover of SPIN Magazine in the interview. Has a more GQ dude ever existed?

I was standing at the back of the room and almost passed out. So inspiring and incredible. Tears and hugs, guys, this is a special performance.

After the jump you can see some snaps from yesterday.  Please pre-order the new album HERE.

New Video from Lia Ices for “Grown Unknown”

Today in an exclusive premiere with Pitchfork TV, we are pleased to present the music video for the title song of Lia Ices’ tremendous Jagjaguwar debut album, Grown Unknown.

Lia Ices’ video for “Grown Unknown” is a visual performance diary documenting modern dancer Ruby MacDougall’s three week voyage across the Pacific from Long Beach, California to Shanghai, China. The song “Grown Unknown” is about resisting our tendency to control and confine our desires; it celebrates the discovery of a personal unknown. Ruby’s dance document aligns with Lia’s song in a most poignant way: confined to a ship in the middle of the massive ocean, she uses dance as a means to express herself amidst extreme newness. For when we surrender to our wild, untamed energies and venture into the unknown, we expose ourselves to personal revelation. The opening lines of the song set the stage for Ruby’s exploratory dance: “I can’t live on a solitary stem, when there’s open land and warm wind.” The footage was shot from a laptop camera, and edited by Joanna Bovay (who also edited Lia’s video for “Half Life”).

Click here to watch and embed “Grown Unknown”

Lia Ices will perform at Lollapalooza in August with select dates in Toronto, Pittsburgh and New York. Set time for Lollapalooza will be announced shortly. For lineup and more info, visit the Lolla site here.

New Bon Iver Interview with Triple J!

Justin Vernon and Zan Rowe of Triple J

Back in March at SXSW we had a terrific secret: there was a new Bon Iver album coming.  Justin did one interview, and one interview only – Australia’s Triple J. Zan Rowe is a tremendous fan and had traveled all the way around the world, so we had to let her in on it.  She recorded a terrific interview to announce Bon Iver, Bon Iver to the listeners on her show – Mornings with Zan. Not surprisingly they spoke about the first song, “Perth,” and Justin’s connection to Australia. The rest of the (very illuminating) interview will likely go live in June.

Brian Williams Interview with Lia Ices

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Brian Williams, or BriWi, as his friends call him (moiself included), is America’s Greatest News Anchor. He’s recently brought us stories of Brooklyn Artisanal Cheese and Slow Jammed the news along with Jimmy Fallon on Late Night. I kinda knew he was into indie rock, but I never knew how hard he was going to rep for Lia Ices.

BriWi loves Lia Ices, particularly the song “Little Marriage.” He met up with her recently at the Rare Book Room studio to play a little and have a chat. The love is palpable. Check out the clip above, or watch the full thing here at MSNBC.com.

Bon Iver, Bon Iver

This incredible new record by Bon Iver, Bon Iver, is the follow-up to the debut, For Emma Forever Ago. It will be released in North America on June 21st, 2011 and June 2oth in the UK.

After the jump we have the official track listing as well as a short piece written about the album by author Michael Perry.

Watch GAYNGS and Kanye West ft. Justin Vernon Perform Live at Coachella

This past weekend at Coachella in Indio, CA, several of our artists kicked so much ass that they trended on twitter. GAYNGS and Bon Iver were two of those bands. Above is a video of GAYNGS performing “The Walker” and below we have Kanye West and Justin Vernon performing “Lost In the World.”

Kanye told Justin over a year ago that his vision for “Lost in the World” was that it was the festival closer. True to his word…

I’ve got another video featuring our friend Justin D. E. Vernon with bonus Ryan Olson from SXSW. These GAYNGS-leaders stopped by the SPIN Shed at SXSW to chat with Peter Gaston about the project, which can really be summed up by Justin here as “lightspeed right past ironic and into the awesome zone.”

Watch Justin Vernon in DeYarmond Edison Perform at The Fader Fort

DeYarmond Edison by Nilina Mason-Campbell for Gawker

DeYarmond Edison, the band that broke up in the cabin fable of Bon Iver, consisting of Megafaun members Joe Westerlund, Phil Cook and Brad Cook, re-united for a three-song set at The Fader Fort on Saturday night at SXSW. Sandwiched inbetween hip hop sets, they played three songs: “Lovers Will” by Bonnie Raitt, “You’ve Got a Friend” by Carole King and “Set Me Free,” a DeYarmond Edison original that blew the unsuspecting crowd away.  Gawker’s Nilina Mason-Campbell took the great photo of Justin performing in a Bart Simpson shirt above.

Below is the great video shot by The Fader of “You’ve Got a Friend.”  Do we have any James Taylor fans in the audience?

Volcano Choir’s First US Tour Dates

When Volcano Choir released Unmap on Jagjaguwar in 2009, it wasn’t clear if the band would ever perform its songs on stage. Then, late last year, Volcano Choir and Collections of Colonies of Bees performed a short and extremely successful Japanese tour. Contrarede’s live footage of these performances blew our minds (watch the video for “Island, IS” above).

We are very happy to announce two Volcano Choir concerts this spring in the U.S.

New Lia Ices Video for “Daphne” !

Lia Ices’ “Daphne,” directed by L.A.-based director Aaron Brown (Focus Creeps) was shot in Sonoma, California. Opening in a lush, mysterious, pastoral setting, Lia is joined by a falcon and a young boy.  At first the three remain separate yet appear unified in some undisclosed way, with Lia at the center and the bird and the child acting as extensions of her. The song is Lia’s personal reflection of the ancient myth of Daphne, describing one woman’s transformation into a tree. It is a story that challenges our concepts of flight and attachment, transformation and rootedness, desire and captivity.

It was important for Aaron and Lia that these images and themes be revealed symbolically like a myth or a fairy tale. The video goes from a supernatural, sylvan world and spirals into a Fellini-esque nighttime revelry. The young boy is the unexpected master of ceremonies at an unconventional gathering of friends and animals who all evoke the approaching event.  Abstracted by super 8 footage, Lia reveals herself as the empowered and expressive storyteller, until she, like Daphne makes her final transformation.

“Daphne” is from the recent Jagjaguwar release by Lia Ices, Grown Unknown, and features a duet with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon.

Starting next week, Lia Ices will begin performing a short European tour that includes La Route du Rock’s Winter Collection on Thursday, February 17th. That evening’s lineup includes Glasser and Pitchfork-favorite James Blake! Basically my dream show, happening in France, thousands of miles away.  Click here to check out the tour dates.

Kanye West + Justin Vernon: Hawaii 10.0

Courtesy of Complex

Courtesy of Complex

Everyone under the music sun with a blog, column or twitter has weighed in with their Kanye West thoughts this week. I have been reading articles and reviews for many hours – searching through video footage, Ivanka Trump’s twitter, cameraphone pictures and glowing reviews.  The dust is settling and a clear picture is emerging of what exactly happened last night.

Part of me wonders if Kanye West fans will listen to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy or look at the film from last night’s show at the Bowery Ballroom and find themselves on this website, wondering who Justin Vernon is.

In that case, welcome!  For the rest of you Bon Iver fans who read this blog anyway, I’ve got tremendous findings including interviews, photographs and youtubes that are insightful, interesting and more than a bit mindblowing.

We put the pussy in a sarcophagus after the jump!

Watch Black Mountain Play Live on Swedish National Television

The Swedish television show Klubbland recently filmed Black Mountain playing in Copenhagen.  Did you know Sweden basically has a Hulu that broadcasts awesome rock concerts, some of them featuring Jagjaguwar artists? WHAT WILL YOU COME UP WITH NEXT, SWEDEN?  Affordable modern furniture?  Mysterious blond duos with insatiable appetites for Lil Wayne and Akon?  LISBETH SALANDER?!!!!

You can watch the entire 20-minute show below, or head to the website to watch the three songs (“Wilderness Heart,” “Queens Will Play” and “Don’t Run Our Hearts Around”) individually.  The 20-minute version comes with a nice intro and interview featuring Steve McBean before the show.

Is it worth it?

Well, I always enjoy playing live.  I don’t always enjoy all the sitting around, but, you know, it’s better than working at Dairy Queen.

Volcano Choir Comes To Life – Rehearses in Eau Claire for Japan Tour

Volcano Choir – “Still” from Volcano Choir on Vimeo.

Some of the questions raised when we announced the existence of Volcano Choir were “When are they going to tour?” and “How will they re-create this live?” The answers to those are 1) They will tour only in Japan, of course, and 2) With lots of practice. We received two videos of Volcano Choir rehearsal, and I’ll be damned if I don’t have a passport. The evolution of “Still” is particularly great.

Listen to “Lost In the World,” the Justin Vernon/Kanye West Collaboration

Over the weekend Kanye West posted his short film, Runaway, to YouTube, and the song “Lost In the World,” the song that samples “Woods” by Bon Iver and features extra vocals by Justin Vernon, closes out the film.

The song starts at 26:40 (and the film portion is mildly NSFW?), but I suggest watching the whole thing.  There is a good post over at Jezebel that interprets the video and offers more insight into film’s themes and artistic direction.

Lia Ices Interview and Exclusive Video Posted at the Village Voice

Oneida’s Collaboration with Arrington de Dionyso at the K Records Studio

Arrington_Oneida_Lathe_ex

When Oneida was on their west coast tour a couple of weeks ago, they stopped in at the K Records Studio with Arrington de Dionyso and The Lights and recorded 26 songs together. The recordings (Attn: audio nerds) were made on a lathe recording machine. Arrington used plastic plates (like, SOLO-brand style picnic plates) to cut these master recordings on. I have it on high authority from Kid Millions himself that the machine looked like this:

The end result was about 13 plates that have been assembled into lovely art-covered sleeves as you see above.

Digital copies were made from the plates, and K Records is sending them out today via their K Zip Pak subcription service. The K Zip Pak is “just endless screaming, crying and carrying on compressed into bite-sized chunks of three minute pop songs. Passionate music for passionate people, like you.” Sometimes the world is perfect.

Several of these plates (that you can listen to on any player) will be made for sale on Arrington de Dionyso’s tour (that starts today)! Be the master, own the master!

…or, wherever you live, in the general direction of TORONTO. The final countdown has begun! The ticker at the Polaris Prize website has a little more than 12 days left before the final gala and announcement of the WINNER. As you might already know, the Polaris Prize is given to the artist who had the best album in Canada in late 2009/early 2010, regardless of genre. No offense, other nominees, but that is The Besnard Lakes for The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night.

If you live in Canada (and a lot of the Jag blog readers do), you can watch the Gala where each nominated band performs one song. Then the prize is awarded, and it’s 20,000 bones!

So, my Canuck dawgs, listen to the gala, September 20th at 8pm EST, on Sirius XM 86 or you can watch it on Much Music’s website at 8pm (with tv broadcast on the 25th).

We have a very cool making-of video to share as well! Meet the cast and crew and see the micro-movie magic go down:

Remember, kiddos! Black Mountain’s “The Hair Song” appears on their upcoming album, Wilderness Heart, out on Jagjaguwar on September 14th in the US (13th in the UK). Watch Black Mountain Perform on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon!

Picture 3

Last night was a total blast! We headed to 30 Rock to go see Black Mountain perform on the first episode since Jimmy Fallon hosted the Emmy Awards.  WHAT A SHOW IT WAS.

The mysterious Scandinavian-looking performer/stylists of “Let Us Play With Your Look” gave a very handsome audience member a new ‘do. The beautiful and radiant Drew Barrymore was promoting her new movie about Long Distance Relayshes, Going the Distance. She faced off with Jimmy in a new game that is similar to the Indiana pastime of “Cornhole.” Snoop Doggy Dogg came out promoting some new charity for the children, but not before he set off the NBC fire alarm from smoking a tonnnnn of you know what in his dressing room.

Black Mountain brilliantly closed out the show with “Old Fangs.” The sound on Fallon is really great – I’ve never heard Jeremy’s Moog sound so awesome. The band got loose and performed the hell out of the song.

Make sure when you’re at the NBC site to watch “Let Us Play With Your Look.”  You’ll bust a gut – shit is so weird.

Spencer Krug is Awesome: An Essay by Joe S., Age 14

Spencer Krug as Moonface

Today we received what is probably my favorite piece of fanmail for Spencer Krug of all time.  Included in the email was a 500-word essay that Joe S., age 14 of Minnesota, wrote in order to win a Spencer-themed 1″ button.  Joe’s opinions contained herein are not necessarily representative of Jagjaguwar or its employees. There is one thing we can both agree on, though, and that is that Spencer Krug is Awesome.

Win a Spot on the BLACK MOUNTAIN Fallon Band Bench

Fistpumping guy: never forget

Besnard Lakes fistpumping guy: never forget

On Late Night With Jimmy Fallon often they will have a Band Bench – stoked fans get to stand behind the band and go nuts during their performance.  I will personally never, ever forget the dude who was directly behind the Besnard Lakes back in March who pretty much fistpumped his way to Besnard Lakes heaven.  The energy was out of control!  People were freaked out!

If you want to freak out (but please, not as hard as that guy) on the Band Bench behind Black Mountain on Tuesday, August 31st, you can enter to win some spots!  Here’s how you do:

Click on the link below and you will be directed to Late Night’s “Band Bench” Sweepstakes entry form.

Please make sure you include the following band code: BLK, in your entry form.

Meet the Winner of the Black Mountain Pre-Order Contest

We announced last month that everyone who pre-ordered Wilderness Heart would be entered in a contest to win a trip to NYC to see them at the Knitting Factory and on the band bench at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

We chose an order at random, and we basically couldn’t have gotten a better winner.  Jag blog, meet Sean A. of Atlanta, Georgia.

Sean reppin the BM at a Hank Williams Jr./Lynyrd Skynyrd show

Sean and his wife, Janet, will be flying to NYC for the festivities. Keep your eyes peeled on the band bench to (hopefully) see them headbanging along.

Thank you for pre-ordering, Sean! Black Mountain has the best fans.

You can still pre-order Wilderness Heart here and receive a poster and download of the record.

New Solo Record from Ladyhawk’s Duffy Driediger

Picture 2

Good news for Ladyhawk fans such as myself!  Today marks the release of a new solo record by Duffy Driediger – Duffy and The Doubters Scriptural Surprise.  9 rad “punk rock commercial jingles.” I actually had no idea this was coming, so I was blindsided with joy and have only stopped listening for lunch and going to the bathroom and such.

Scriptural Surprise is an LP-only release from Triple Crown Recordings (order from their email at the site), and the LP includes a digital download code and a 24 page 11″x17″ newsprint booklet of photographs by the brilliant Jason Nocito. Jason has shot some of my favorite music photography, particularly the Bon Iver cover of The Fader as well as the Ladyhawk feature from 2008 around the release of Shots.

Tracklisting is a good read:

1. Metal Detector
2. No Wild Horses
3. Bedside Bible Bong
4. Sorry Mom My Brain Is Dumb
5. Doubters
6. Spider Baby Jesus
7. Ouija Bored
8. Planet of Vampires
9. Horror

Duffy also sings on my favorite single of the year, “The Hundredth Time” by Gigi. It’s available as a 7″ from K Records and can be purchased here. What the fuck – it’s SO GOOD.

Hey Y’all, The Kanye Rumors are True: Best Collaboration of All Time!

4886289316_588512e50d

TGIF, everyone!  I had Stefania take this picture of me laid out on a pile of ice in the Jagjaguwar parking lot this afternoon.  Feels good, man.

The internet heard a rumor yesterday about Kanye West and Bon Iver working together and RAN WITH IT. I read some true things and some false things, but overall everyone got the gist.  There is a new track on Kanye’s upcoming October (currently untitled) record that features a sample from the Bon Iver song “Woods” and vocals from Justin Vernon called “Lost in the World.”

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Kanye said the following about Justin:

“He’s similar to me, like where he just does shit just so people would be like, ‘Oh shit how did you do that? How did that happen?’ He’s just a really cool guy to be around.”

We concur!

Justin Vernon did his first lengthy interview in over a year with Ryan Dombal at Pitchfork. In the article, which just went up, he elaborates on the project with Kanye, hanging out in Hawaii and his relationship/work with GAYNGS.

GAYNGS tour dates will feature Justin Vernon at every show.  Tickets are on sale now!

Oneida is opening for The Flaming Lips in Central Park!

Incredible choices have been made!

ratedo6

Last year Oneida did a day-long re-creation of their studio The Ocropolis at All Tomorrow’s Parties in New York state.  It was super cool. Curating the festival was The Flaming Lips, the official proprietors of FUN, the live band that ends all live bands, the band that will cover you in blood and confetti and make you beg for more!!!  Always men of impeccable taste, they have invited Oneida to perform with them again – this time opening for them at the Central Park Summerstage on July 26th.

The show is sold out, but if you can manage to grab a ticket or astrally-project yourself there, Oneida’s on at 6pm.

I won’t be going because the last time I went to Central Park I had my purse stolen while I was stalking my boyfriend and THEN I stole rollerskates from Gregory Hines.  It was totally traumatic and also caught on video.

Pizza Day and Black Mountain

TGIF nerds!  I fell in the parking lot today and multiple people saw!

Today was Pizza Day in the office, which is always a very good time.  Breadsticks and trust falls once a month – that’s us.  There are a lot of good za options here in Bloomington, but if you’re curious, we order from Greeks and Avers.  We have unsuccessfully set up a taco bar in the garage – I’ll update you when I figure it out.

I’ve got to talk with you about Black Mountain if that’s alright.  Posters are done!

Kristen Stewart Throws The GAYNGS Sign

drudge-siren

We see what you’re doing there, Kristen Stewart!

Yesterday at JFK KStew, outspoken Bon Iver fan, threw up the GAYNGS sign to the paparazzi. She forgot to put her thumbs up, but whatever, this is clearly her way of showing us that she’s down with the Prince-approved and smoothest band in all of Minneapolis.

I’ve probably posted this before, but if you want to throw up the GAYNGS sign yourself (or do it correctly), here’s a handy video.

The New York Times Features Kid Millions of Oneida

courtesy of The New York Times (by Joshua Bright)

“The Man Forever album may be a solo endeavor, but it is also an expression of a musician who has become deeply enmeshed in the underground rock world of New York and beyond. In the late 1990s he booked the Knitting Factory in Manhattan, and by playing in more bands than even he can easily keep track of — as well as working at Oneida’s recording studio and operating its record label, Brah — Kid Millions has become a ubiquitous force in a constantly changing scene.”

To celebrate the new St. Ives LP, Man Forever, The New York Times’s Ben Sisario wrote a great profile on Kid Millions.  Recognize!!!

You can purchase the Man Forever LP w/digital download code from SC Distribution or itunes.

Pitchfork Talks to Steve McBean about Wilderness Heart

The new single from Wilderness Heart by Black Mountain

September 14th, 2010

Black Mountain’s third LP, Wilderness Heart, was built on the west coast of America, in part at London Bridge Studios in Seattle with producer Randall Dunn (Boris, Sunn O))), Kinski) and predominantly in Hollywood at Sunset Sound with producer Dave Sardy (Oasis, Wolfmother, LCD Soundsystem).

Each studio’s environs and producer had a great impact on what was recorded there – the LA sessions having a free and summery vibe and the ones in Seattle a chillier, more claustrophic feeling.

The new record is packed with succinct rock songs that pulse and pound with startling precision: it pummels you, you ask for more. Wilderness Heart is arguably Black Mountain’s tightest, most concentrated outing, but there’s still plenty of raw rock energy at work. It’s their most metal and most folk oriented record so far.  It’s a Black Mountain pop record, which is to say it’s nothing like pop at all.

The band cites a slew of disparate influences – New Order, King Crimson, Studio 54, Alex Chilton, sunshine, Janis Joplin, Please Kill Me, Shirley Collins, Mickey Newbury, jalapeno salsa, Night of The Hunter, Cactus Taqueria, Funky16Corners podcasts, Dennis Wilson, the house blowing up in the desert at the end of Zabriskie Point – but, as keyboard player Jeremy Schmidt points out, “Who knows how these things connect with the holistic mix of often dissonant forces that become Black Mountain?

Wilderness Heart will be released on September 14th in the US and September 13th in the UK.

Introducing the New Solo Record from S. Carey of Bon Iver, All We Grow

s.carey_cw_011

We are very happy to tell you that on 8/24 (8/30 in the UK), we will be releasing the debut album by S. Carey, All We Grow.  You will recognize Sean as one of the brilliant percussionists for Bon Iver. In the past couple of years he patiently crafted a record in his time off from the band that basically blew our minds and also set the bar really high for vacation productivity.

Black Mountain’s Next Album – New Details Emerge

Happy almost-Memorial-Day-Weekend, JagJagublog readers!  We’re ready for a long weekend of remembering our fallen servicewomen and men, the Indy 500 and relaxin.  Before all that, though, we should think about Canada.

In the coming weeks we will be spilling our guts about the exciting music Black Mountain is unleashing this fall.  Their warm-up tour is in place (see tour dates), and Amber just did an interview with Jessica Suarez over at Stereogum for an official Progress Report.  She gets heavy into what it was like working with two different producers on the record.  Fun stuff for Black Mountain geeks, which we are.

Have a safe and happy weekend, and we’ll see everyone on Tuesday!

From My Cold, Dead Hands: Defending The Fog Machine

We have a response to a special person who handed this to us at the Besnard Lakes show at the Bishop in Bloomington last night: U MAD

FOGMACHINE

Admittedly, I am invested on this topic of whether the fog machine is cool or not. Because I spent an afternoon hustling around Austin at SXSW to procure a fog machine for Besnard Lakes purposes from Rock and Roll Rentals.  I carried it many blocks full of stumbling, booze-soaked hipsters, and it was WORTH IT.

Happy Birthday to Ladyhawk’s Darcy Hancock

I love Ladyhawk so much that when someone asks me what my favorite Jagjaguwar band is, I have a weird unconscious reflex where I immediately shout “Ladyhawk” super wildly.  I’m not embarrassed about it.  Have you listened to Shots?  I mean, come on. (Special birthday photo after the jump)

On December 12th last year, the O traveled to Toronto, Ontario to play the Constantine’s 10th anniversary show (this making Oneida their big brothers) at Lee’s Palace. Download Peter Gabriel’s beautiful take on Bon Iver’s “Flume”

One day Justin Vernon answered his phone, and Peter Gabriel was on the other end.  There’s no recording of the conversation, but we bet it kind of went like this:

Peter Gabriel: Hi Justin Vernon, this is Peter Gabriel, and I’m doing a covers record.  I’d like to do a cover of your most excellent song “Flume” from your album For Emma, Forever Ago if you wouldn’t mind.

Justin Vernon: Um, hi Peter Gabriel. You’d like to do what with the what now?

Getting ready for LOST with Justin Vernon, Josh Wells and the Jagjaguwar crew

sawyer-lost

There might be some pre-conceived notions about what constitutes water cooler conversation at an indie label, but I have to tell you that it’s basically the same old shit.  There’s enough fantasy baseball and fantasy football to keep my eyes rolling for most of the year, but I am happy to report that the majority of my co-workers love all the same television programming that I do.

Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Annie Clark of St. Vincent Perform Together at Benefit for Haiti

Jagjaguwar messed up, you guys.

Brooklyn Vegan put together one hell of a benefit to help the earthquake victims in Haiti, and we probably should have hopped on a plane right as soon as we heard about it and high-tailed it over to the Music Hall of Williamsburg.  We didn’t, and here is what we missed:

VOLCANO CHOIR Members Play Guitar To Chaplin At The New York Guitar Festival

539w

Next Thursday, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Chris Rosenau of Volcano Choir will be performing at the New York Guitar Festival.  Justin and Chris have completed two sets of guitar music to accompany two films by Charlie Chaplin – One AM and Easy Street.  I caught up with Chris this week to see how the music is coming.

So you’re going to Eau Claire this weekend to finish up stuff?

Yep. We have everything written at this point,  now we just need to polish it all up.

How did you go about composing for the films?

Justin was gone so much of 2009 we decided it was best to have me take a crack at a film, just kind of feel it out.  So, it started this summer with me watching a bunch.  Nothing struck me right away.  Chaplin is nuts, but finally I settled on ONE AM.  I wrote some skeletal stuff for Justin and I to begin to work on.
