Oneida Teams Up with Rhys Chatham for a Special Performance at Ecstatic Music Festival

While much of the music world was distracted by SXSW this weekend, Oneida were blowing minds back home in New York. The O teamed up with avant-legend Rhys Chatham as part of Merkin Concert Hall’s 2012 Ecstatic Music Festival this Saturday. The combo performed original compositions, sewing together different corners of the minimalist/maximalist cloth from which they are all cut. Listen to audio from the performance at WQXR!

Village Voice sat down with Rhys Chatham prior to the performance for a chat about his experience working with Oneida. Chatham shared, “Oneida aren’t a minimalist band. They’re what’s happening today, but somehow I just didn’t feel any difference in age or mindset or anything. We just all worked together as musicians because they’re great musicians. In all our discussions we never talked about history, we just talked about stuff and then, when we actually played, I was just so surprised. It just seemed to work like a hand in a glove. I didn’t have to do anything. I mean, seriously. I brought my stuff in and they played like they’d normally play. They nailed it.” To read the full interview, go HERE.
