Kanye West + Justin Vernon: Hawaii 10.0

Everyone under the music sun with a blog, column or twitter has weighed in with their Kanye West thoughts this week. I have been reading articles and reviews for many hours – searching through video footage, Ivanka Trump’s twitter, cameraphone pictures and glowing reviews.  The dust is settling and a clear picture is emerging of what exactly happened last night.

Part of me wonders if Kanye West fans will listen to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy or look at the film from last night’s show at the Bowery Ballroom and find themselves on this website, wondering who Justin Vernon is.

In that case, welcome!  For the rest of you Bon Iver fans who read this blog anyway, I’ve got tremendous findings including interviews, photographs and youtubes that are insightful, interesting and more than a bit mindblowing.

We put the pussy in a sarcophagus after the jump!

Today New York Magazine posted a Q+A with Justin about working with Kanye in The Vulture.  It’s a great, inspiring read.

Complex Magazine published a cover story on Kanye West for the January issue. They were in Hawaii with a photographer, and the gallery at the site is incredible! Our favorite part (other than the fact that Justin Vernon is just… there) is the wall of rules about tweeting, acoustic guitars, hipster hats and shutting the fuck up.

The article is very well done and explains a lot more about how Kanye assembled the players and put the record together than anything else I’ve read.  Justin does get interviewed for it and leaves us with this genius pull-quote:

“I’m just a fuckin’ lumberjack dude from Wisconsin. I’m not going to go out there and try to be this awesome rap guy.”

Last night at the Bowery Justin didn’t act like he was some awesome rap guy (which would have been weird), and he held his own on the stage, sounding great by all accounts.

Sean Fennessey from the Village Voice did a review that breaks it down by song (they played the album in order) and the live players.

Pitchfork’s photographers took the best pics of the night.

There is crappy video of the whole thing, too, which we will post anyway because we live in Bloomington, Indiana and this is exciting as fuck.

I want to post the video of “Dark Fantasy,” too, but the video quality is such that I don’t feel like subjecting our dear blog to it.

Tomorrow Kanye West will be performing “Lost In the World” at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  Rumors have been flying around about Justin also being there, which I don’t think is true (pretty sure he’s already back in Eau Claire for the holiday).  This week did prove, though, that anything can happen with Kanye West.  One minute you’re in Wisconsin tweeting photos of your adorable cats, and the next minute Diddy is shouting at you from the VIP section of a balcony. Sean Combs!  P Diddy! Puff Daddy!

That’s all for now because Jagjaguwar is shutting down for Thanksgiving shortly.  We wish you all safe travels, good food and uneventful family gatherings.
