The Hippest Kids Listen To Okkervil River

Okkervil River and Roky Erickson played an Ice Cream Social to possibly their youngest audience to date (although sharing music with youth is a passion Will Sheff has shown before). Sponsored by Ice Cream Man and the FYF Festival, the event was open to all ages, and the kids came out in numbers, digging into free scoops of ice cream as they listened to Roky and Okkervil River perform. While some seemed more interested in the ice cream than the music, there were definitely some discerning listeners in the bunch. When the band opened up the floor for a Q&A, Roky and crew fielded such questions as “Why is the Zombie song so loud?” and “What’s your opinion on ukuleles?” (!) And when one little girl was asked “is this your first rock show?” her mother quickly secured her child’s hipster cred by interjecting “oh, she went to see Patti Smith,” discerning indeed!  All and all this was a wonderful wonderful event that makes all those dark bar shows drab in comparison and begs the question of why more rock n’ roll can’t be a family affair?
