New Video: Peter Gabriel and Justin Vernon Discuss Covering Each Other’s Songs

To celebrate the release of Scratch My Back and the impending Record Store Day split 7″ by Bon Iver and Peter Gabriel, Real World has released a film featuring the two artists discussing the songs.  Both interviews include audio of Peter Gabriel’s “Flume” and (never before heard!) Bon Iver’s “Come Talk To Me.”  It’s a really special video, and I’m tearing up a little bit.  Okay, I’m tearing up a lot.

Make sure to arrive early and  pick up this 7″ on 4/17 at your local Record Store Day celebration.

  1. I need a tissue…sniffle…really. Awesome. By the way, when did Peter Gabriel become Anthony Hopkins? Huh. Maybe Justin will perfom “Come Talk To Me” at Music Now. It sounds like rainfall. A girl can hope.

  2. Great to see. I thought the Peter Gabriel cover of “Flume” was great from the start but (and it’s no surprise i know) the Bon Iver cover of “Come Talk To Me” is just absolutely superb. Genuinely love it a great deal. It’s not too dissimilar to the original like he said and it’s just really quite an uplifting song, very much like that sorta ‘religious’ way Justin described it as. Something very spiritual about it, for sure.

If nothing else, this video is just further proof that Justin’s just one of the greatest dudes ever. I’ve kinda been on a similar path to the guy with the personal setbacks, the feelings of total emptiness and struggling in the world with all sorts within and whatever, and i couldn’t be happier for the dude now. As humble a dude as you’ll find. Makes me feel things will work out.

    Take care all

  3. I was so excited when I saw that Peter Gabriel, one of my favorite artist since I was a teenager, had recorded one of Bon Iver’s songs. I was so anxious to hear what Justin would do of Peter’s and was not disappointed. “Come Talk To Me” had been a deeply personal song for me growing up, so to hear my new favorite artist sing it was amazing.

Both Justin and Peter are incredible artists and beautiful human beings.

    Thank you both!

  4. I find it fascinating to think about the perspective both Justin Vernon and Peter Gabriel had on one anothers’ chosen songs. I also had no idea about the meaning behind Flume, it is one of those songs that will ease my mind…and I’m not sure if it is the the structure of the song or the unknown meaning of the lyrics. Probably both.

  5. [...] the North,” but there is nothing remotely twangy about this earnest, moody moment. Apparently hanging out with Peter Gabriel has had some effect upon Justin Vernon’s choice of background synthesizers. The usual [...]
