Bon Iver and Peter Gabriel Swap Covers for Record Store Day Exclusive 7″

JAG170full
It turns out that the great Peter Gabriel cover of Bon Iver’s “Flume” for his record Scratch My Back isn’t the whole story. Bon Iver was asked to contribute a cover as well, and the result is a split 7″ with a cover of Gabriel’s “Come Talk To Me” that will be available as an exclusive from Jagjaguwar at participating Record Store Day stores.  More info after the jump!

For anyone who has witnessed a Bon Iver performance over the course of the past couple of years, one thing that stays with you is the group’s rare gift in covering other artists’ material. From The Outfield’s “Your Love,” to the Sean Carey led Talk Talk cover “I Believe In You”, to a group harmonizing effort in Loudon Wainwright’s  “The Swimming Song” or the now legendary rendition of Sarah Siskind’s “Lovin’s for Fools,” the group’s talent for rendering material and making it their own is impossible to ignore.

The thoughtful approach and nuanced appreciation displayed by Bon Iver illustrates a compelling understanding of the music they interact with. Who wouldn’t want to hear their favorite song done with such care, such homage to the original, such invention brought to the details, such great questions asked about the music itself? The rich and selfless tradition of sharing the jubilation in others music lives on, vitally with Bon Iver.

When Peter Gabriel called Bon Iver ringleader Justin Vernon and asked if he’d like to do a swap of sorts, it was an instant done deal. Vernon could have picked up a guitar and taken a standard approach to the cover, but that is not how a Bon Iver project works. Its very spirit has become collaborative and experimental. By enlisting the help of Bon Iver regular Sean Carey, as well his sister and brother in law, Vernon made this a Bon Iver affair, and expanded the Bon Iver family yet further.

The Bon Iver rendition of “Come Talk To Me,” from Peter Gabriel’s 1992 album “Us,” is an intimated triumph. It has the sensation of soaring, but its feet and hands are dug into the ground, rooting it there while it flirts with flight.

On the flip side, Peter Gabriel’s off kilter arrangement and instrumentation of “Flume,” the lead track from the Bon Iver classic “For Emma, Forever Ago,” bounces like the echo from a grandfather clock in an empty wooden room, marking time, the most subtle events reverberating intimately in lasting cycles. As part of Gabriel’s ambitious “Scratch My Back” series, this rendition of “Flume” reminds us of his greatness, and gives us a glimpse into the working mind of a legend who helped define and redefine the artful craftsmanship possible in pop music.

  2. Nice, hope I’ll be able to grab one in NY.

I got the sticker you guys sent in the mail btw. Cheers!

  3. Can us non-Us people pick up a copy of this anwhere? Please say the answer’s yes….

  4. Wonderfully written, Lucy.

Couldn’t agree more. One of the greatest things i’ve always felt about Justin is (i feel) his understanding of music; not just of genre or type, but of composition, arrangement, emotion etc. He just seems to make the ‘perfect’ decision with each tiny detail of the all music he’s a part of.

I’ve genuinely loved all the covers by Justin and the guys & particularly the Talk Talk cover with Sean on vocals. It was just great to hear something pretty different to the familiar Bon Iver sound. I heard them perform that at End of the Road Festival in ’08 & loved it. It was the 1st time i’d heard that song (also their version) & also Sarah’s “Lovin’s For Fools” with Bowerbirds & the latter just struck me in a big way when they did that. It was such a beautiful, real & great song. Having Justin on one verse, Phil on the other and all the guys on the chorus felt so perfect.

I couldn’t get that song out of my head for the rest of the festival & kept singing it (the chorus) quietly to myself as i walked around or sat in my tent, not knowing half the words and singing it completely wrong, and as soon as i got home i was looking for that song.

I was hoping there would be an EP (digital i’d imagine) or something of all the covers put out there sometime. Not some big production of them or anything but just clean, studio versions of the songs. Just something to fill a little gap between Blood Bank & the next Bon Iver record.

Lovin’s For Fools, The Park, I Believe In You, Your Love, Blue Tulip, Tampa to Tulsa, Simple Man, Swimming Song, Mercury…

(sigh) I’m boring myself writing this much. Apologies.

  5. Thanks for your comment, Joe! I also wish there was an EP of Bon Iver covers, but for now we’ve got to listen to youtube bootlegs. Because Justin *is* so meticulous in his recording/performance, I’d be surprised he’d find the time to tape them. The live performance gives him and the band so much freedom in that regard.

Definitely look up his work with Anais Mitchell and this Peter Gabriel cover. It’ll definitely tide you over!

Oh, and P.S. Most of this post was written by the General Manager of our hearts and minds (and our office), Kevin Duneman. I just stole it! Hey Kevin, nice job.

  6. Hey David, this particular Jagjaguwar release is only for Record Store Day in the US. It is likely, though, that this recording will make its way for release in the UK at some point. We’ll keep everyone posted on what happens!

  7. [...] Bon Iver will cover Peter Gabriel for an exclusive Record Store Day release. [...]

  8. Gotta love free music, thanks!

  9. will this be released in every store participating in RSD? i just wanna check because i really want to pick a copy up
