UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA

While legions of artists show fidelity to psychedelia's roots, Unknown Mortal Orchestra has always shared the rare quality that makes the genre's legends vital, a constant need for exploration. Last year, frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson descended into his home studio in a Portland basement to chart out where's he traveled since his last set of unhinged psych-soul ballads. He discovered that the best way for him to move forward would be to look back. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together.

LISTEN // Unknown Mortal Orchestra Share New Tour Dates And SILICON Rework Of “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone”

Today, Unknown Mortal Orchestra is announcing a new slew of tour dates in the US and their first ever shows in South America. Selling out venues across the country, UMO have elevated their live show to new heights, so it’s only fair to give the people what they want, which is The Best Band in the World.

Brothers Ruban and Kody Nielson have been playing, recording and collaborating on music for decades.  From the influences of their jazz musician father and dancer mother, Ruban and Kody have gone on to play in New Zealand’s The Mint Chicks, and at its end in 2010, moved on to separate projects.  Ruban formed Unknown Mortal Orchestra out of Portland, while Kody collaborated with various artists and musicians before his own solo project, SILICON, took shape.  At the end of 2015, as UMO’s Multi-Love and SILICON’s Personal Computer made the rounds, garnering critical acclaim, Ruban and Kody (who played keyboards and drums on UMO’s M-L) took some time to rework tracks from each of their records.  The theme of phones led to Kody working on UMO’s “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone,” changing it from a bouncy, sprite disco track to a sparser song filled with space, treated vocals and isolated drum breaks.  Ruban’s rework of SILICON’s “Cellphone” is turned moody and dark, with a skittering beat and additional vocals.  The limited edition “Phone” 7” will be available on April 1, 2016. Previously, the two shared Ruban’s rework of “Cellphone,” and today, we’re sharing Kody’s rework of “Can’t Keep Checking My Phone.”

NEW ZEALAND MUSIC AWARDS // Unknown Mortal Orchestra Win ‘Best Alternative Album’ At New Zealand Music Awards

Screen Shot 2015-11-19 at 5.07.18 PM

Unknown Mortal Orchestra, who were recently awarded the 2015 Apra Silver Scroll, won Best Alternative Album for Multi-Love last night at the New Zealand Music Awards.

Watch their video for “Necessary Evil” which premiered recently on Adult Swim.

WATCH // Unknown Mortal Orchestra Premiers Video For “Necessary Evil” on Adult Swim

If you had your eyes tuned to AdultSwim.com or their Facebook page, you may have seen a curious animated short film set to Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s “Necessary Evil,” one of the stand-outs from this year’s acclaimed record Multi-Love. Illustrated and directed by Sean Solomon (Lucas Bros. Moving Co.), the video will also air nationally on Adult Swim during their “Toonami” block on Saturday, November 21st!

Solomon said this about his video for “Necessary Evil”:

The video is an abstract love story about two characters whose insecurities and paranoia eventually drive them apart. I tried to show both character’s perspectives using elements from the lyrics. I had a team of amazing animators and friends.

The band is currently on tour in Europe, and will soon head to Australia and a homecoming of sorts in New Zealand, where Ruban Nielson and his brother Kody recently won the country’s most prestigious songwriting award, the APRA Silver Scroll, for co-writing the title track “Multi-Love.” They’re also nominated for four New Zealand Music Awards, including Album and Single of the Year (ceremony on Nov. 19th). They’ll then return to the states for a winter tour with Lower Dens. The whole tour is likely to sell out, so those looking to attend are encouraged to get tickets while they can!

LISTEN // Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Ruban Nielson Reworks SILICON Track “Cellphone,” Shares Fall Dates With Lower Dens

JAG274-UMO-SILICON-7-1425

When it comes to the brothers Nielson, their music is often a family affair. Starting off together in New Zealand as bandmates in the Flying Nun band The Mint Chicks, Ruban and Kody Nielson continue to work together to this day. As the co-writer for Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s APRA Silver Scroll-winning song (and stand-out from this year critically acclaimed album of the same name) “Multi-Love,” Kody Nielson also writes and releases music under the name SILICON (whose excellent debut album was released earlier this fall on Weird World/Domino). The brothers decided earlier this year that they would each take a stab at one of the other’s songs, so today, we’re sharing Ruban’s rework of SILICON’s song “Cellphone,” featuring Ruban’s vocals and added instrumentation. Stay tuned for SILICON’s take on a UMO song. If you think really hard, we bet you can guess which song it will be. Here’s what Ruban had to say about his brother and their collaborations:

“My brother was an important part of the recording process of Multi-Love, especially with the drums and keyboards. Kody’s SILICON album, God Emoji, extends a lot of the tones and ideas we put into Multi-Love, so I think you’ll enjoy it a lot.”

Perhaps news that is just as big and exciting as the brotherly collaboration is the announcement of 2016 North American tour dates with the amazing Lower Dens supporting. If these shows are like any of the previous US tour dates, they sure to sell-out in advance, so be sure to get your tickets now. Tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 16th.
